Already shorthanded for the team’s clash with Toronto FC, the New York Red Bulls received news Thursday that they will head into Saturday’s game without yet another key player.

The MLS Disciplinary Committee announced on Thursday that the league had fined and suspended Red Bulls forward Peguy Luyindula for one game. The French forward was sanctioned for “serious foul play which endangered the safety of an opponent” in last weekend’s 1-0 Red Bulls victory over the Houston Dynamo.

Luyindula’s suspension resulted from a tackle on Dynamo midfielder Luis Garrido that earned the Red Bulls forward a yellow card.

In addition to Luyindula, the Red Bulls will also be without regulars Tim Cahill, Roy Miller and Ambroise Oyongo, who have been called up to international duty with Australia, Costa Rica and Cameroon, respectively.

The Red Bulls are in action Saturday when they host Toronto FC, who sit just three points out of playoff position with three games remaining.

What do you think of Luyindula’s suspension? How will the Red Bulls respond to missing so many contributors?

Share your thoughts below.

  1. To be honest with you I think not having Peguy is a good thing. He really has been playing poorly of late and I would rather have Bover or Christianson in there in that they don’t lose the ball as much as Luyindula.

  2. Pretty poor timing too because RBNY is shorthanded this weekend due to MLS’ insistence on playing crucial end of season games during FIFA breaks.

  3. Wait, he got a suspension for a foul that only received a yellow? I thought disciplinary committees in other leagues reviewed red cards for possible lengthening of the suspension, but not a yellow card. Come on.

    • The DisComm reviews everything. How does this compare with other leagues around the world? I know that red-card suspensions are sometimes lengthened from the standard one-game suspension if the foul was egregious, but do other leagues suspend players for offenses that only got a yellow card from the referee?

  4. The irony. The league is punishing a player by suspending for a game against a team who is competing for a playoff spot with the the team that was the victim of the foul.
