Just minutes into his second senior call-up, U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder Joe Gyau hobbled off the field with a knee injury that will now sideline him for the foreseeable future.

Despite originally hoping that the injury was minor, Jurgen Klinsmann announced Monday that the 22-year-old Borussia Dortmund winger is set to undergo surgery on his left knee that is expected to sideline him until January.

“Unfortunately, it’s not a little, minor thing.” said Klinsmann before the U.S.’s training session at FAU Stadium on Tuesday. “He’s getting surgery back in Germany and he will be out probably until January. That’s unfortunately the result of an MRI that was taken here. He flew over to Germany, and there the team doctors decided to have him undergo surgery, so he will be out quite for a while.”

Gyau’s injury came 22 minutes into his second U.S. appearance, a 1-1 draw with Ecuador, which came roughly one month after his exciting debut against the Czech Republic. The winger was immediately substituted after falling to the ground and left the team before its Tuesday friendly against Honduras in Boca Raton, Florida.

On the club level, Gyau made his first team debut with Dortmund on Sept. 24. The 22-year-old will now likely be sidelined through the Bundesliga’s winter break, which takes place from Dec. 21 through Jan. 29.

“It’s a real bummer,” said Klinsmann, “because he really gave us some spark.”

  1. Sometimes meniscus tear and u get surgery to scrape off extra meniscus that will grow where the tear occurred. I had that. Its not as serious as an acl. 2 months off is nothing. With that being said i felt scared to turn quick after my surgery. Good luck joe

  2. this sucks… based on how Holden and Gatt have bounced back, I’ll hope for best and expect nothing from Gyau for 2-3 years. I hope he defies history

  3. Well, time to support him through his healing. Also, time to forget about including him in any future USMNT discussions. man has a mountain to climb, and we’ve all seen it before. Hopefully he’s an outlier.

    • Gyau was expected to be with the 2nd team this year anyways. If he’s back to training in early Jan. he could potentially see time with the reserves in early Feb. 15. Good showings with the reserve team and a strong summer (possibly Gold Cup) or pre-season and he could be back into consideration for the 1st team starting the 15-16 season.

    • unless its a very serious injury where you’d go to the best in the world, he’s probably going to the team affiliated surgeon. German medicine is rather good.

  4. Ives, if you’re going to continue to allow video ads with sound to autoplay on your site (especially without any clear way to stop them or turn off audio), I’m not coming back to this site.

The Gyau news is very sad, especially given that he was making the bench consistently for Dortmund. I really hope that he can make a full recovery (not even a quick one — just a full one), not just for the sake of the Nats, but for the sake of his career.

    • I’m not gonna threaten to not return…but Ives, I will second the sentiment.

You’ve GOTTA have a way to turn the volume on these ads off, and they tend to crash my java script as well, which is a red-flag there’s some malware running in at least some of them.

If you don’t get a handle on this, it is going to effect your site traffic.

    • It really scares the cr@p out of my girlfriend, which is somewhat funny…. but yeah I’d like to see my Flash crash less frequently, as well.

  5. A real shame because he was just starting to get some first team minutes. Still, at least it isn’t more serious and Gyau still has time on his side.
