Amazing. Even when Jozy doesn’t make the bench his horrendous skill persistently drags down the rest of Sunderland’s quality. Sunderland would have won the match if Jozy had been loaned to Burnley beforehand.
At least Altidore had no part in the 8-0 thumping Sunderland took.
Just finished watching Dallas/Colorado. Acosta impressed definitely the potential for a bright future there. A long term Yedlin/Acosta fullback combo is exciting. Speed kills.
In other news, Sunderland deserves every bit of their struggles. Let Jozy play!!
Acosta looks very very competent for someone his age and size. Actual home grown player too.
Just entered the game vs Schalke
*brooks, that is
Not starting, but Brooks back in the squad.
“Altidore didnt get to play on the best team in spain”
If he can’t get playing time with such an awful team like Sunderland don’t expect him to get anywhere close to playing for the best team in Spain Or England.
As far as the 8-0, I’m sure Altidore would’ve made it at least 8-7 with his one goal every 33 games scoring record.
By your logic, if Chicharito was so good, why was it that he couldnt start for a CONCACAF team at the World Cup this summer, one that had to qualify through the play in game? Kind of easy to play that simple stuff, right?
As for Sunderland, if their strikers are all “EPL” quality (with the exception of Altidore, of course), what explains them getting ONE shot on goal during an 8-0 drubbing against Southampton of al teams? What explains Wickham and Fletcher combining for only 3 goals all season? I guess they are terrible too? Or could it be something else?
this season, in all competitions, i believe Jozy would have a better goals per minute ratio, haha
All of Sunderland ‘s players are horrible Jozy just happens to be the worst of the bunch. That’s why he rides the bench.
Well I see you were not willing or able to address Chicharito riding the pine for a team that couldn’t even beat out Honduras to qualify for the world cup…
With respect to Sunderland, they were good enough to stay up last season, so your “they’re all horrible” statement isn’t exactly “fact”, is it?
Perhaps you should actually watch them play before taking uninformed pot shots because you don’t like Jozy Altidore (or are just bitter because Mexico’s reign as top dog in CONCACAF is officially over).
You’re selectively talking about the past. Let’s go further back and talk about when Chicharito was scoring for Manchester United and Mexico, or we can talk about the players in general. Today Chicharito started for Real Madrid, scored a goal, created a pk and had an assist. Altidore didn’t make the 18 for Sunderland.
If they were both Americans Altidore would never get called by Klinsmann again. Ever.
Bell.
They are not both Americans. So your assertion about what Klinsmann would do in that hypothetical situation is pure fantasy (weren’t you the one calling out folks for “talking theories”?)
You seem to think that think that a player’s performance has nothing to do with the team around him. Even Gus Poyet disagrees with you:
“[Jozy] has many good qualities but the one that tends to get overlooked is that he has an unbelievable shot on him — so powerful…I still can’t believe he is only 24. He hits the ball with such power and we have to use that power to best effect…Sometimes it is hard — it is very easy to look at a player and say: ‘Oh, he doesn’t score goals.’ But sometimes you have to look at how you play, especially if that player has scored in other teams and not in yours.”
Poyet went on to compare Altidore’s situation to his own when he was playing for Uruguay: “In a situation like this, I always analyse myself when I used to play…What worked for me as a player? Well, I needed crosses, so the worst team I played in was my national team.“In my national team in the years that I played, we were a team that played through the middle — we never played the ball out wide. No wingers. That meant we weren’t crossing and that meant I could not score. I was rubbish!
“So then people would be saying: ‘Why is it that he is scoring so many goals in Europe when he can’t score for the national team?’ And the answer was simple — different teams. The Uruguay team’s style did not suit my game and this is my point at Sunderland. We need to find a style and a system which plays to the strengths of our best players.”
“If you don’t do that for Jozy, then it is going to be difficult for him to score and we will work on that.”
AZ and the USMNT have been able to do that for Altidore, resulting in him setting a record for the number of goals scored by an American in Europe, as well as him scoring the 5th most goals ever for a USMNT player, ever. (Chicharito in #3 all time for Mexico). These are facts.
Right now, Sunderland does not put the ball in dangerous positions for their strikers, which is why Connor Wickham has only 1 goal this season, which Poyet acknowledged as well: ““I actually think he is playing better than he did last year, but he is scoring less goals. It’s about finding a balance. We don’t want him to be the best player on the pitch every week without scoring, but nor do we want him to be awful and scoring a goal every now and then. He needs to find the balance between playing well and scoring – and he will get there…We need to keep on creating chances for him and it is only when we stop creating chances that he will have a problem. There’s a big difference between a striker who doesn’t score because his team is not creating chances, and one who has chances but is missing them.”
So, according to Poyet, Sunderland’s strikers are not scoring because the team is not getting them the ball. Not because they are all “terrible” as you have tried to argue.
EEEEEEEEXXXXXXXXXXXACTLY. Bell is so dense he cant seem to understand the real point. comparing jozy and chicharito is fantasy because their surrounding teams are vastly different
you’re missing the point completely. If you want to hate on Jozy, fine, but it seems silly to do it out of the blue, on a day he didnt play, after scoring in his most recent 2 matches…..
My earlier point was more to the idea that if YOU played 90′ on sunderland and 90′ on Madrid i guarantee you’d have a higher chance of scoring or assisting with Madrid– Their team has more class, skill, etc. so using your Sunderland stats to say you were a bad player would be misleading judgement….. (…….allowing time to process……… you with me?……. it’s all quite obvious…smh…………)
somehow i feel like you still wont understand. so replace “YOU” with “Jozy” and it should make sense. also im not saying the jozy is a world class striker etc etc… im just explaining the rationale of “Sunderland plays terribly” part of the equation. Jozy needs to play better, YES. He’s not an awful player, NO. He needs to play on a team with better talent, YES. He’s (right now) ready to play for Madrid, NO. no one’s saying he’s the end all, be all of US Soccer, He’s a young (24) player that could continue to develop. currently he’s on a terrible team and could use an unselfish team with longer possession. but saying “[he must suck because he can’t make the line up on an awful team]” is silly and untimely.
Could, should, would…. You’re talking theories and I’m talking facts. We will never know how many goals can Jozy score for a better team because if he can’t make the 11 at Sunderland there is no way he’s going to a better team much less Real Madrid where Chicharito plays, scores has the best goal per minute ratio in the best league in the world.
so how many goals has cheech scored for sunderland? let’s face it: unless they’re playing for the same team at the same time (in the same role, which they don’t play), you’re just “talking theories” too.
Your last name must be “end” if you think we are going to be impressed that a fan of chicharito comes over here to rip on altidore. You know where the door is.
to avoid confusion, my responses were towards Bell here, not Nate.
Monchengladbach might be the only thing keeping Bayern from winning the league before the new year. Dortmund’s struggles continue as they now sit in 14th.
Chicharito with two assists and a goal today for R Madrid, not bad.
One goal every 33 minutes played and with that goal Chicharito beats Altidore’s La Liga record. I’m sure that’s also Sunderland’s fault.
From a US national team perceptive, who cares what Chicharito does or doesn’t do.
yep. cheech could score 5 goals a game for his club, but as long as he keeps playing like sh!t for mexico, i’m okay.
he is playing great with Mexico though
He plays like a two week old turd when he faces the US, but we still dont give a rats behind what he does. If you are a fan of his there are plenty of tri message boards you can go and high five yourself to death.
+1 Gorgeous comment.
thank you; said it much better than i could.
who exactly are you arguing with?
Bell, Altidore didnt get to play on the best team in spain……. the talent around a player makes a huge difference…… I wouldn’t expect someone like you to understand that on your own tho. now im not arguing that jozy is better than chicharito, because quite frankly i could care less about chich. but it’s trivial to dog a player for no reason. chich had 2 assists and a goal today. great. no need to call out jozy, especially without realizing the differences in surrounding teams, thus a just comparison cannot be made.
Also, I’m sure you’re one of the ones saying the excuse “Sunderland plays terribly” can’t be used to help Jozy’s case…….. Exzibhit A: Sund’s 8-0 loss including 2 OWN GOALS………………..
the thing is that Altidore can’t even make it to the starting XI of one of the worse teams im the PL, you really can’t go and say that his teammates are to blame, the guy is obviously doing something wrong to be on the bench of such an awful team.
I’m not going to defend Jozy, he got himself in the situation. However Sunderland have no midfield at all. On the rare chance they do happen to move the ball someone just takes a 40 yard shot they sky over the bar.
If you enjoys the sport, watching Sunderland for a couple weeks will make you question that. They are truly painful.
Antoine, my comment was mostly towards Bell for taking a rip at Jozy and using Chicharito’s current form on Madrid as proof that Jozy sucks….
overall, yea, he isn’t starting but of the three forwards, Jozy has a goal, Fletcher has 2, and Wickham has 1. it’s not as if he’s being left behind in the dust. he still is a sub in some games and plays (rather played) in cup matches. he has the chance to score a couple more before January and GTFO of there. While Sunderland’s terrrible play doesnt EXCUSE Jozy, it does FACTOR IN the EXPLANATION. Jozy hasnt played his best but it’s not as if his team has been running circles around him. He’s a good player on a bad team.. that’s different than a Terrible, worthless player on a bad team…….
The goal was sooooo easy for him if you can find the highlights. He is just standing unmarked in the box. James lobs the ball to his head. 6 defenders in the box and not 1 within arms reach.
The pass was lovely though.
Lmao at Sunderland.
whoa, 8-0?!
After watching much of their agonizing season last year, I refused to watch them this time around and so far great decision. Hope Jozy can move on.
0:5! Clearly, must be Jozy’s fault!
can’t say i’d mind too much if jozy doesn’t see the field for them again.
aside from not being tempted to watch anymore of their miserable games, i’d also like jozy to have as little association as possible with this godawful team.
Johnson on for Gladbach.
Nothing really happening, oh take that back Hannover almost scored going down the middle.
Then comedy goal keeping from Hannover oh wow.
f’in delaney for crystal palace. got a totally unnecessary second yellow right after azpilicueta was sent off for chelsea. even the announcer was saying ‘that was just stupid’.
Altidore better get his arse to another club ASAP!
Does Klinsi publicly acknowledge the anti-American sentiment among many of the Euro clubs? I’m sure he simply feels it’s another challenge that American-born players should embrace. It is increasingly looking like a huge payday is the only reason American players should sign with clubs abroad.
who do you think should be playing and isn’t right now?
“Does Klinsi publicly acknowledge the anti-American sentiment among many of the Euro clubs?”
Why would he? He shares it.
Lol
I’d like to hear your explanation as to why you think JK “hates Americans.
Youre comment is ridiculous. He married an American Woman and lives here. Furthermore, there are all types of anti – (enter nationality/ethnicity/ race here) sentiments in Europe, thus the Fair Play Ads everywhere you go. With that being said, anywhere you go in Europe..If you are good enough you will play… Stop makin excuses. Jozy started all throughout last year. yes the team sucks, but he didnt do himself any favors either. Enough with the JK hate.
I see why Klinsmann is upset about certain guys coming back to MLS. He can no longer justify the trips to Europe for scouting with US Soccer because no one is actually getting on the field anymore.
+1. SBI would probably agree with this as well to generate some site traffic. . The comment board is pretty quiet….
Guess the Americans are resting today with the exception of the Keepers of course – Altidore, Shea, and Packwood not in the 18 for their respective clubs…..
Perhaps this is wishful thinking, but after Jozy’s comments this past week, him not being in the 18 may mean a deal is close
Deal close? the transfer window is not until January.
They could loan him out. I’m fairly certain the window does not apply to loans.
Which would seem to be a bad idea since they have no one behind Fletcher and Wickham.
Probably it’s because he went 90 in Florida.
perhaps Poyet knew they would lose today 8-0 and kindly spared Jozy.
or perhaps Poyet wanted to prove the Jozy-haters wrong and show that Sunderland really do play terribly; thus it’s not all Jozy’s fault. haha
It does apply to loans…. but there is something called an “emergency loan” that allows clubs to circumvent (basically these are short-term loans of up to 90 days– this is what was used to get Brek to Birmingham. There is no real criteria for an “emergency” that needs to be satisfied).
This window for emergency loans closes Nov. 27th… not to restate the obvious, but this would then carry into the Jan window for a longer-term deal.
My guess would be that a team losing their striker to injury would be an “emergency”.
I would think Sunderland would want to find a way to showcase Jozy to potential suitors.
What I mean is…. there actually is no meaning in the term “emergency” as relates to the rules… it’s just EPL code for “short term”
But I agree with the greater point you make certainly…. Sunderland are almost certainly shopping him already (or should be— hard to know with those lazy clowns)
