Talk about a perfectly-executed set piece.

Jose Torres helped push Tigres UANL to the Copa MX semifinals on Wednesday night, scoring a winner off a stunning free kick in a 2-0 victory over Toluca. Torres netted the decisive goal in the 56th minute, curling a shot into the near top corner after teammate Juninho faked a right-footed shot.

It was the 26-year-old midfielder’s first goal of the season across all competitions, and first since March 30. Torres started and played 90 minutes in the home win on Wednesday, as did fellow American Herculez Gomez.

Tigres, the second seed in the tournament, will host No. 3 Santos Laguna in the next round with a chance to advance to the title game on the line. Michael Orozco’s fifth-seeded Puebla will receive a visit from No. 8 BUAP in the other semifinals fixture.

What do you think of Torres’ goal? Would you like to see him called back into the U.S. Men’s National Team at some point in the near future?

  1. I haven’t had the chance to watch him in a while, but did see several games earlier this year and he looked great playing out on the left wing. I think he was MOTM twice.

I know he’s also been deployed at right mid, so I can’t say enough to make a fully educated guess on his status with the new team… but he sure looked like a player reborn the few times I did see him

  2. With multiple gold cups, Copa America, etc. coming up in the next cycle, it seems like a good time to bring Torres back and give him a shot.

  3. Of course. Torres is a magnificent player.

Sadly, I don’t see Klinsmann coming back to JFT. Torres would have to become a different player.

One of our great talents. But never played in his best position for the national team. And not really fitting the coach’s vision…

    • agreed. great goal tho and he is playing as consistently as any other CM in the pool.

with Corona and Gyau out for a while and MLS playoffs, door might open for a second chance in November or maybe March.
