Talk about a perfectly-executed set piece.
Jose Torres helped push Tigres UANL to the Copa MX semifinals on Wednesday night, scoring a winner off a stunning free kick in a 2-0 victory over Toluca. Torres netted the decisive goal in the 56th minute, curling a shot into the near top corner after teammate Juninho faked a right-footed shot.
It was the 26-year-old midfielder’s first goal of the season across all competitions, and first since March 30. Torres started and played 90 minutes in the home win on Wednesday, as did fellow American Herculez Gomez.
Tigres, the second seed in the tournament, will host No. 3 Santos Laguna in the next round with a chance to advance to the title game on the line. Michael Orozco’s fifth-seeded Puebla will receive a visit from No. 8 BUAP in the other semifinals fixture.
