College Soccer Weekend Preview: Washington vs. Oregon State, UCLA vs. Cal and Stanford Headline Week 7

University of Washington men's soccer team plays Cal

Expect a high-scoring affair Sunday night, as two of the three most prolific offenses, SBI’s No. 1 Washington and No. 22 Oregon State, headline College Soccer’s action this weekend.

In a weekend filled with important matches, the Huskies and Beavers will arguably play the biggest one. Washington have won seven consecutive matches, with wins over No. 8 California and No. 7 Stanford in their last two. Their upcoming schedule will not be any easier, as they play the Beavers, who are eager to continue their fine form after dominating California on Sunday, 6-2.

Both Khiry Shelton and Timmy Mueller scored hat-tricks to give the Beavers their impressive victory, but the Huskies’ Darwin Jones has eight goals this season and has helped spur his side to be one of the most dangerous attacking teams in the country.

UCLA has a tough weekend, as they visit No. 16 California Friday and Stanford Sunday. The Golden Bears have been productive offensively this season, scoring 26 goals in nine games, but the Bruins have had many low-scoring contests and have only conceded five goals all season. Expect a close-knit affair from these two sides. Stanford will look to avenge their loss to No. 1 Washington, as they host San Diego State on Friday and the Bruins on Sunday.

No. 17 George Mason and No. 13 Saint Louis face off in an interesting Atlantic 10 match Sunday. The Patriots have lost two straight matches, while the Billikins are looking for another impressive victory against a top side before finishing the season against competition ranked outside of the SBI’s Top 25. The Billikins will play No. 20 Davidson Friday, while George Mason also visits Dayton Friday before their meeting with the Billikins.

Another game to keep an eye on this Saturday: Bowling Green vs. Akron. The Falcons are 9-2 this season and have the nation’s leading goalscorer, Pat Flynn, who has 12 goals; however, the Falcons do not possess a single win over a team with a winning record. Their match against Akron is important to prove their worth in college soccer’s top-team discussion.
