Valencia made a statement on Saturday that La Liga’s title was not necessarily a three-team race.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side took on defending champion Atletico Madrid and stormed to a 3-1 victory, to earning Valencia SBI World Team of the Week honors.
Valencia scored a trio of goals before Atletico knew what hit them, with Andre Gomes and Nicolas Otamendi following up a Miranda own goal with a pair of finishes. Meanwhile Diego Alves kept the champions at bay with a penalty save to extinguish any hopes of an Atletico comeback, sealing not just three points, but a spot among the league’s contenders.
The Spanish club beat out a strong field of competitors including Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Celta Vigo and Fiorentina for this week’s honors.
