Lionel Messi now stands alone as the Champions League’s all-time leading goalscorer.
For the second time in three days, Messi shattered a goalscoring record with a hat-trick, as the Barcelona forward scored a trio of goals to lead the way in a 4-0 victory over APOEL.
Kickstarted by Luis Suarez’s first goal for the club, Messi scored in the 38th, 58th and 87th minutes to seize the top spot among the tournament’s scoring list. The Argentine is now three goals ahead of previous record holder Raul, while Cristiano Ronaldo remains lurking just four goals behind.
Here’s a look at some other Champions League scores from Tuesday:
AGUERO SAVES MAN CITY IN VICTORY OVER BAYERN MUNICH
Down a goal to Bayern Munich with just five minutes remaining, Manchester City’s Champions League campaign looked all but over before Sergio Aguero saved the day.
Aguero scored in the 85th and 91st minutes to push Man City to a 3-2 victory and save the team’s Champions League campaign. The pair of goals gave Man City their first win of their competition to draw the team level with Roma and CSKA Moscow heading into the group stage’s final games.
After his first half opener was canceled out by finishes from Xabi Alonso and Robert Lewandowski, Aguero leveled the scoreline in the 85th minute on a misplaced backpass from Alonso. Six minutes later, the Argentine broke through on goal following a Jerome Boateng error to give Man City a chance at advancing into the tournament’s knockout round.
CHELSEA SWARM SCHALKE
Facing the club he won the Champions League with in 2012, Roberto Di Matteo’s revenge mission was a colossal failure.
Di Matteo’s Schalke were swarmed by an attack-minded Chelsea, as the Blues dominated on their way to a 5-0 victory over their former manager’s side.
John Terry opened the scoring in the second minute, setting the tone for a game that would play out as an uphill battle for the German side. Goals from Willian, Ramires, and 2012 Champions League hero Didier Drogba were joined by a Jan Kirchhoff own goal as Chelsea sealed a spot in the knockout rounds.
