Happy Thanksgiving from SBI

Hello everybody. It is Thanksgiving Day, that day of the year you come to SBI looking for a soccer fix and find this familiar waving turkey greeting you.

American soccer fans have plenty to be thankful for, from a thriving Major League Soccer to a continuously growing number of soccer TV viewing options. The U.S. national team has qualified for the 2014 World Cup, with a promising generation of young talents leading the way.

What will I give thanks for from a soccer standpoint this year? Here are some things that came to my mind this morning:

What I am most grateful for in 2014:

The readers, and listeners, who help make this job worthwhile.

The SBI staff that helps keep the site rolling on a daily basis, and has helped us complete our seventh full year as an independent soccer news website.

The success that many former SBI staff members are continuing to have in the soccer media world.

The successful transformation of the site formerly known as Soccer By Ives to what is now SBI Soccer, complete with redesign, new logo and new mobile version.

Year two of The SBI Show, which has enjoyed more than 650,000 downloads over 180 episodes.

Year two of working at, with a great team of  co-workers who have helped the site reach new heights.

A growing soccer fan base in the United States, and more soccer news outlets than ever before.

My sons finally becoming interested in soccer, with the help of the World Cup and Panini stickers.

My first trips to Dublin, Brazil and San Francisco.

The opportunity to cover my fourth World Cup, and experience an amazing six weeks in Brazil.

The brilliance of players like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, James Rodriguez, Aguero, etc.

The coaching brilliance of masters like Jose Mourinho, Diego Simeone, Carlo Ancelotti, Marcelo Bielsa and so many others.

Last, but certainly not least, my family for being understanding about all the trips I take and all the soccer I watch.

These are just some of the things I’m grateful for when it comes to 2014. I’m sure I could make this list twice as long.

Now it’s your turn. What will you be giving thanks for as a soccer fan today?

Share yours below (And have a Happy Thanksgiving).

  1. Happy Thangsgiving to you and the team, as well. Thanks for your continued hard work in keeping the best USMNT site and community out there. Without it, I would have to go back to posting 500+ word comments about the pros/cons of single-entity structures, artificial turf, and Financial Fair Play in graffiti-spray on city bridges and abaondoned buildings. You should see the mess I made of the old ChivasUSA offices.

  2. The coaching brilliance of masters like Jose Mourinho, Diego Simeone, Carlo Ancelotti, Marcelo Bielsa, Jurgen Klinsmann, and so many others.
