After winning their first two matches in Spain, the U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team were unable to finish off their ten-day abroad on a high note.

Head coach Tab Ramos and his U-20 team ended their stay in Marbella, Spain with a defeat, falling 1-0 to Canada U-20. The loss puts the USA’s record at 2-1-0 in the three-game series, including wins over Russia U-21s and the Republic of Ireland U-21s.

Taking on a highly-touted Canada side with a handful of players already receiving national team call-ups or interest, the U.S. failed to find the net as they were shut out for only the third time this year.

Canada took the lead in the fifth minute as Toronto FC Homegrown signing Manny Aparicio fed Dylan Carreiro, who fired past U.S. U-20 goalkeeper Santiago Castaño. The best chance for the U.S., per U.S. Soccer’s match report, took place in the 42nd minute, when Dembakwi Yomba headed a Russell Canouse cross off the crossbar.

Here’s a look at the U.S. U-20 starting lineup:

USA: Santiago Castano; Shaquell Moore, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Matt Miazga, Tyler Turner; Kelly Acosta, Russel Canouse; Tommy Thompson, Junior Flores, Romain Gall; Dembakwi Yomba

What do you think of this result? Disappointed to see the U.S. lose? Still impressed that they defeated Russia and the Republic of Ireland? How many of these players do you see making the qualifying team?

  1. Very pleased, I knew we had some decent talen on the rise but Canadian teams (at any level) rarely train together unlike the US youth teams. The fact that we spoiled their party with their u20’s going undefeated for the entire year makes it that much sweeter >:-)

    • I think for this match Turner played at LB. Ramos plays (and Jurgen has all the youth coaches playing this style) a 4-2-3-1. Kellyn Acosta was played as a Dmid here alongside Canouse. Dunno if that’s the best choice for him, I like Acosta at RB.
