The Montreal Impact’s Italian connection isn’t finished with the departure and retirement of Marco Di Vaio.

The Impact announced on Monday morning that they’ve signed veteran Italian midfielder Marco Donadel. Terms of the deal were undisclosed, but Donadel has been a free agent since September, when he and Napoli mutually agreed to terminate his contract.

The signing will be made official upon the receipt of Donadel’s international transfer certificate and his Canadian work visa.

“We are pleased to add Marco to our roster,” Impact head coach Frank Klopas said. “He will bring a lot of experience and leadership to our team, as well as quality in the middle of the field. He has the right mentality and character going forward for next season and Champions League.”

Donadel spent six and a half seasons with Fiorentina, where he made 184 Serie A appearances, 11 UEFA Champions League appearances, 15 UEFA Cup appearances, and 14 Coppa Italia appearances between 2005-2011.

Donadel came up through the AC Milan youth system and spent time on loan with Lecce, Parma, and Sampdoria before joining Fiorentina. In 2011 he joined Napoli but was a bit-part player in the squad. He spent last season on loan with Hellas Verona.

“I am very pleased with this opportunity to join the Impact,” Donadel said in the press release. “Since the first training session in Montreal, the club made me feel like a part of their family. Throughout this process, I felt like the Impact really wanted me to be a part of the team. I would like to thank all those who helped make this possible. I am really looking forward to January to get this adventure started.”

What do you think of this news? Do you see Donadel starting from day one? Like a midfield consisting of Donadel, Bernier, and Piatti?
