MLS fans probably did not need a reminder of how revered Thierry Henry is within league circles, but they got one anyway on Monday.

Henry announced his departure from the New York Red Bulls on Monday morning, likely signaling the end of his stay in MLS. It did not take very long for players throughout the league to share their appreciation for the legendary striker.

From teammates past and present expressing a deep admiration for their time alongside him to opponents who were thankful to have competed on the same field against him, Henry received all types of farewell messages on social media. The kind words poured in from all corners, as dozens of players made sure to take time out of their day to pay respect to the 37-year-old Frenchman.

Here is a rundown of some of the appreciative posts:

  1. Thierry Henry…..At 37 his abilities, class and passion is one of the best in the league, which only makes you realize how lethal he was like in his prime. A player that makes everyone better around him, teammates and opposition. A genius on the ball, a friend and mentor to teammates, a true proffessional and a spectacle to MLS fans (Freddy Adu I hope you are listening/seeing/learning….Please!!!!!!!), its going to be hard for NYRB or any other team to land a player that can impact a team like Henry………Now its up to Kaka (orlando city), David Villa (New York City), Robbie Keane and Possibly Ronaldinio (please oh please!!!!) to keep improving the league and home grown players around them

    • You forgot Frankie. I bet Frankie will contribute. Not as outrageously as Titi, or (possibly) Ronaldinho, but solid top tier @MLS nonetheless.

      • I enjoyed reading it. I am not on twitter so it was interesting to see how he has impacted the players he has played with and against in his too short MLS career. He is one of the greatest of all time, and I look forward to reminiscing to the younger fans of the game when I am old. I was truly sad to see him leave MLS when I read his post this morning, even though we all pretty much knew it was happening anyway.

        Thanks for the post Franco!

      • @ Tony: Your comment reminds me of the billboard ad that says “Made you look. Billboard advertising works.” Whether or not you think this is newsworthy, you’re interacting, clicking, etc.

    • How so? Most just said it’s an honor playing alongside a football legend, followed by a pic with him…the only name being dropped is TH14’s. Is it because it’s over twitter?

Honest question, not trying to sound rude or offended.

      • yes, the only name being dropped is henry’s, but it still seems like name-dropping (“oh him? that’s just thierry henry, just playing some soccer with meeeeee. yeah, we played together.”)

      • i meant name-dropping in the sense of building yourself up through association.

what would i recommend? “Thank you big man. You are a legend It was always an honor to see you playing!! I wish you the best for the future.@ThierryHenry big respect”

like i said, it wasn’t all of them; just a lot of them.

and yes, i know this is a really dumb thing to have a problem with, but hey, what’s the internet for?

  2. I’m just a fat guy with a computer, but it’s been an honor to watch Thierry Henry ply his trade in our humble league for the past 4.5 seasons.
