Qualification to the expanded field of 24 teams in the Women’s World Cup concluded on Tuesday evening in dramatic fashion.
Heading into second-half stoppage time still scoreless in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, both Ecuador and Trinidad and Tobago were expecting to go into extra time. The first leg had been a scoreless draw on Nov. 8 in Quito, Ecuador.
Monica Quintero had other ideas though. The Ecuadorian rose highest on a free kick in the 92nd minute and sent a header past the Trinidadian goalkeeper to put Ecuador ahead. The South Americans held on to clinch the final place in the 2015 Women’s World Cup as they won the CONCACAF-CONMEBOL qualification playoff.
With the victory, Ecuador joins a stacked group of nations in the tournament, which is slated to take place next summer in Canada. Among the nations competing in the tournament are the U.S., defending champions Japan, and powerhouses Germany, Sweden, and Brazil.
On Saturday, FIFA will conduct the World Cup draw on in Ottawa, Canada.

Arriba mi gente! First time to make it to the big leagues, congrats Ecuadorian ladies!
This result surprised me pleasantly! I admire the coaching staff of T&T though.
