New York City FC has yet to play a game, but the club is already undergoing changes in the front office.

The club announced Thursday that Tim Pernetti, who has been NYCFC’s chief business officer since the club formed in 2013, will leave his post to join media agency WME | IMG. At the same time, NYCFC introduced Tom Glick as the club’s new president. Glick comes from a top-level position with Manchester City FC, NYCFC’s parent club.

Pernetti will join WME | IMG as president of multimedia for its college work after NYCFC’s inaugural match of the MLS regular season, which Pernetti called a “natural exit point.”

“With college sports being my true passion and such a core part of my make-up, this awesome opportunity to join the team at WME | IMG was impossible to refuse, particularly at this natural exit point as New York City FC embarks on the next stage of its development,” Pernetti said in a statement released by NYCFC. “It has been my honor and a true privilege to work with the best in the soccer business and to be part of building the foundation of New York City FC. I will be a fan for life.”

As new club president, Glick will “be responsible for all aspects of the organization on a day-to-day basis,” according to NYCFC.

Glick comes to New York City from a role as chief commercial and operating officer at Manchester City FC in England. Prior to that, from 2008 to 2012, he was president and CEO of Premier League side Derby County FC.

Despite his recent background in English soccer, Glick, a U.S. national, has extensive experience in American sports. He had a brief stint in the NBA with the New Jersey Nets and spent four years as head of marketing for the Sacramento River Cats, a minor league baseball team.

“This role for this club is arguably one of the most exciting in soccer right now,” Glick said in a statement. “I am thrilled to take up the responsibility and the challenge. After two years of laying the foundations for this inaugural season and beyond, we have an incredibly talented team both on and off the pitch. I very much look forward to playing my part in leading and supporting them as we embark on the next and most important stage of our development.”

NYCFC will play its first MLS regular season match on March 8 vs. Orlando City. New York City’s home-opener will be the following week against the New England Revolution.

  1. Pernetti oversaw an incredible new Soccer Specific stadium in New York City and has the great Lampard currently practicing with NYCFC getting ready for first kick. Now he can move on to his true love. Increasing the profiteering from unpaid college students.

    Well done! Cha-ching!

His left that job with a minor league baseball team just ten years ago, that’s a pretty impressive career arc.

  5. Makes sense for Tim. He’s a former football player and his background is in college sports. Got a bit of a raw deal with Rutgers, in my opinion, and hopefully he does well in his new position.

  6. For a club trying to create trying to prove it isn’t just the little brother to MCFC hiring their former CEO probably isn’t the smartest move.
