Is this the new USMNT, USWNT jersey?

New kit leak small edited by CM

By FRANCO PANIZO

A new year will apparently bring a new jersey for both the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams.

An image of an all-blue kit has has surfaced online and the jersey is supposedly set to be unveiled later this month. Giving further credibility to the notion that this is the new U.S. look is an image of forward Alex Morgan wearing the jersey, which started to make the rounds on Monday.

The jersey is unofficially being labeled as the new away kit, which would indicate that it would replace the red, white and blue secondary jersey that the U.S. used in 2014. That kit received much public criticism during its unveiling, but wound up being the best-selling jersey in U.S. Soccer history.

While there is no official word yet as to if this jersey is legitimate, U.S. Soccer has a history of releasing third or alternate kits during the second year of a jersey’s life cycle.

In 2011, the U.S. Men’s National Team sported a red jersey with a blue sash. Two years later, both the men’s and women’s sides wore a centennial kit to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of U.S. Soccer.

On social media last week, members of the U.S. women’s team said new kits from Nike had arrived without unveiling its look.

What do you think of this jersey? Like it better than the bomb-pop look? Still wishing U.S. Soccer would change the crest?

  1. I’ll be so glad to see the bomb pop kit disappear. Awful. You think this new one looks like France away kit? Well the bomb pop looked like we’d borrowed our uni from Slovakia – no wait, Costa Rica, or was it Chile? Just didn’t look remotely original.

Hate to say it, because I was horrified at the unveiling, but the Where’s Waldo hoops was the best idea as a “permanent” look for the USA. No other national team wears hoops. We would have had a signature look that everyone around the world would instantly recognize. Oh well.

  2. Road grey should be the permanent USMNT away kit. Its original, as no other national team wears it, and has precedent (2008 away was close to perfect). Its also a classic nod of the cap to the national pasttime, baseball, and works great with navy and red Think how great the grey Dodgers away uniform looks, with the blue lettering and the red number off to the side. Or the iconic Yankee away with navy New York and numbering (and no name). Or Atlanta, with red outlined in blue. Road greys are already part of America’s sporting identity. Let’s cement that consistently please.

  3. Every version gets worse. fade to black? Is black one of the USA colors now? or maybe black & blue cause we have to play like hacks?

  4. what is it every two years we do this… this one looks okay. better as a training shirt than the actual jersey but if it is the jersey its not bad. probably not planning on buying one.

Nike and USSF need to take a moment and actually think about this. Red, White and Blue (dark blue like the flag) renditions of the Centennial kit and done. stop screwing around with these barely passable designs. Nike makes some of the best and classic jerseys in the world; Barca, Juventus, Brazil, England, Boca Jr., Club America, Celtic, Croatia, Cosmos! and outside of soccer too.. they should get this.

owell this design kinda looks like all the turf fields the men’s and women’s teams will be playing on over the next two years.

  5. Nothing stokes the fire of complainers, whiners, and boo bird USMNT fans does like a new kit unveiling.

I am sure it will sell quite well when all is said and done.

  6. Of all the Nike kits besides the Centennial, I think the 1998 WC kits hold up really well, especially the red jersey. How would you rank the top 10 and bottom 10 kits?

  7. Look I totally get having Nike as the exclusive outfitter for the MNT with them being an American company and Adidas, Puma, et al being foreign companies. But Nike has so many epic fails and only a few hits like the Centennial jersey. A) we need a regular red kit B) the color blue should always match the color in the American flag C) The same rules should apply to any red appearing in the kit D) we need a new badge E)We should always have 3 kits F)we should even experiment combinations by swapping out the jerseys, shorts, and socks of each kit…kind of like the Oakland A’s circa 1972-74.

  8. This one just looks like France. My money: white centennial with the cool crest = permanent home jersey. Rocket popsicle red, white, blues from this past World Cup – permanent aways.

  9. Love it! Back to blue! I just prefer a blue jersey for the USA. A lot of teams wear red. Not as many wear blue. I say stick with blue! Only thing though, I am not so sure about the top of the shoulders being faded. But as with all jerseys, I have to wait and see what they look like on the pitch.

  10. Personally, I would just make the Centennial kits and crest our standard. The crest not only has history behind it, but the white and dark blue look so fresh and clean on our boys. For our away kit, I would go with any mix of red, white, and blue as long as it has the slash design, evoking memories of that 1950 underdog USA team vs England. Though it would be difficult to change the white and dark blue every 4 years.

    • Are the shoulders white? I thought it was just highlights on the rendering, but I just checked out the Alex Morgan photo and it looks like the shoulders are white with no sort of fading into the sleeve. Why would you do that?

  11. Those are clean, it is amazing to me how picky people are about these kits. It seems like people always have some issue with them.

  12. I wish that they would keep the bomb-pop kit for several years. It is an awesome look for the teams. I would like an all red jersey someday.

    • I am so happy to see how much love the Bomb Pop shirt is getting these days— I always knew it would get its proper appreciation, much as it was derided at first….

I believe to this moment that we would’ve beaten Belgium if only we’d had that extra bit of magic that came from that special shirt…. It added 500 life points to John Anthony Brooks against Ghana… Wondo would’ve needed considerably fewer to finish that chance..

  13. hate it. Sick of Nike’s marketing department ensuring that we have no history, no continuity, no recognizable “brand” (to use a word they would understand)

  14. The crest needs a reworking too. It’s looks like clip art from 1992. With the USSF being more than 100 years old, surely we could come up with sort of faux-historic looking crest that spoke to our 100+ years in the game.

  15. I think it’s time for the US to grow up a bit and pick a signature shirt. I think that shirt should be the hoops (Waldo) shirt. It’s the only international jersey out there that instantly defines the players as American. Brazil has their yellow, the Netherlands their orange; it’s time for the US to pick something and stick with it. Nike or whoever could tweak the jersey every cycle to squeeze the fans just like all the other nations do.

      • Count me in for red and white hoops with blue shorts for a home look. Not a huge fan of that shirt with white shorts and white socks though. I prefer it when they wear some blue with it.

Leave the away and third jersey for a red and blue experimental kits.

      • Agreed. The hoops jersey is the only one I can remember. well, except for the denim of 1994, but that’s memorable for entirely different reasons…

  16. Funny comments about France and Argentina – which are possible, by the way, because they have long-lasting uniform styles and don’t change their distinctive look every year, like some national teams. Well, only one national team I can think of (but I’m sure there is someone else out there as silly as us).

    • While I do wish we had a consistent and memorable “home” or “first” jersey/look like Argentina or France or Mexico, the fact is almost every country plays games with their other kits, even these guys.

    • Jack,

They want people to care. People who don’t care don’t buy jerseys.

That is the only reason they change it.

Other wise they should have stuck with the 1994 denim number. What could be more American?

      • If only we had the French Jerseys they always look really good. Though I did like the blue/white/red jersey.this summer, the white one was horrible.

      • The white one was truly dreadful. reminded me of something a caddy would wear. I actually liked the away one, once I got past the fact that it looked like a popsicle. it was memorable. This new one is just kind of boring

    • My reaction, as well. Thing is, there are a LOT of leaked jerseys that float around before these releases (probably not unrealistic to assume that Nike floats a lot of these leaks themselves to solicit market feedback).

Def not a big fan of this one.

      • a couple clues that it is the new kit:

-The Women’s team said they had arrived to their camp.
-There is a photo of a WNT player wearing one…..

so unless it’s a training top, it’s most likely for real.

Do I like it? welllllll it’d be in my top 3 of all time but I still think the US can do better. TBH, we’ve never really had a stellar kit (non-white). this is partially the reason why i’ve never bought a US kit, they’ve been horrendous. I almost caved and bought the bomb pop. i think i only like the bomb pop cuz it reminds me of Dempsey scoring in the WC. but if this new one’s for real i could see myself buying it. again, its not the greatest but it’s not gaudy, tacky, or just dumb (1994 away….. looking at you).
