Real Madrid may have earned a victory Tuesday, but the team lost much, much more.

James Rodriguez broke a bone in his foot Wednesday during Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Sevilla. Rodriguez, who contributed a goal in the 12th minute, was removed in the 27th minute after injuring his right foot.

“After the tests carried out on James Rodríguez by the Real Madrid medical services at the Sanitas La Moraleja Hospital, he has been diagnosed with a fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his right foot,” the club said in a statement. “The player will undergo surgery in the coming hours.”

In addition, defender Sergio Ramos was removed from the contest as well, as the centerback was substituted with a suspected hamstring injury just nine minutes in.

Real Madrid, who will see the return of Cristiano Ronaldo following a suspension, return to action this weekend against crosstown rivals Atletico Madrid.

Here are some more news and notes from Wednesday evening:

IVORY COAST ADVANCE TO AFCON FINAL

For the second time in three tournaments, the Ivory Coast is set for an African Cup of Nations finale.

Runners-up in 2012, the Ivory Coast will have a chance to claim their first AFCON title since 1992 following a 3-1 defeat of DR Congo Wednesday.

The Ivory Coast kicked things off with a Yaya Toure finish in the 20th minute, while DR Congo’s Dieudonné Mbokani evened the scoreline just four minutes later from the penalty spot. Gervinho restored the lead shortly before halftime, while a 68th minute tally from Wilfried Kanon ensured advancement.

The Elephants will meet either Ghana or hosts Equatorial Guinea in the final, which is set for Feb. 8.

COUTINHO, STERLING LEAD LIVERPOOL COMEBACK

Liverpool appeared set to join Manchester City and Chelsea as the FA Cup’s early-eliminated, but goals from Raheem Sterling and Phillipe Coutinho were just enough to claw back.

The Reds overcame a 1-0 deficit against the Championship’s Bolton Wednesday to escape with a 2-1 victory and seal a matchup with Crystal Palace in the next round.

After conceding a penalty kick early in the second half, Liverpool found their equalizer in the 85th minute through Sterling, who volleyed home a spectacular chipped through-ball from Emre Can to nod the score at one. Not to be outdone, Coutinho provided another finish of the spectacular variety, as the Brazilian’s long distance volley clanged off the crossbar and in in extra time.

DORTMUND FALL AGAIN TO STAY BOTTOM OF BUNDESLIGA

Things aren’t getting any better for Borussia Dortmund.

The German powerhouses fell yet again Wednesday, this time to Augsburg by 1-0 scoreline. With the loss, BVB remain in last place in the Bundesliga, two points behind Hertha Berlin.

Augsburg’s finish came from Raul Bobadilla, who finished off an assist from Halil Altintop in the 48th minutes.

BVB will be back in action Saturday against Freiburg.

HIGUAIN SCORED LATE WINNER FOR NAPOLI

Napoli needed every second possible to advance to the Coppa Italia semifinals.

Gonzalo Higuain scored a 93rd minute winner, as Napoli topped Inter Milan, 1-0, to advance to a two-legged semifinal matchup with Lazio.

The Argentine took advantage of a slip-up from defender Antonio Ranocchia to finish off a quick throw in by curling to the far post. With the loss, Inter’s slump continued as the club has won just one of their past five matches.

    • It’s a disaster. They are at the bottom of the table and have scored the fewest goals in the Bundesliga so far this year. 2 years ago they were first and Robert Lewandowski in a BvB uniform won the golden boot for 2013-2014 season. They have fallen extremely hard.

      • It does seem unfathomable that they could be so bad with the amount of talent on the roster and a first rate manager. I know they had some injury issues, but even with the losses of some key players, they should still be fighting for a spot in Europe. Blows the mind…
