Sunday Evening Ticker: Ghana, Ivory Coast reach AFCON semifinals; Chivas posts key win; and more

Wilfried Bony Ivory Coast unknown

To close the weekend’s quarterfinal Africa Cup of Nations action, Ghana advanced to their fifth consecutive semifinal in convincing fashion Sunday, easing past Guinea 3-0.

The hero of the day was Christian Atsu, who bagged a brace, and his second goal was something special. The Everton striker cut in from near the touch line and fired a wide blast from well outside the 18-yard box that Guinea goalkeepr Naby Yattara could not reach.

Ghana look like favorites heading into hosting Equatorial Guinea next in the semifinals on Thursday in Malabo. Ghana has won the African Cup of Nations four times, but last reached the final in 2010, losing to Egypt.

Elsewhere, Wilfried Bony got his groove back and his timing could not have been better.

The Manchester City striker had failed to help Ivory Coast throughout this Africa Cup of Nations tournament, but managed an all-important brace to lead his side past Algeria in a match closer than the 3-1 score line made it appear.

This weekend also saw Equatorial Guinea top Tunisia, 2-1, and DR Congo moved past Congo, 4-2.

Here is the other overseas news from Sunday (after the jump):

It may not have been pretty, but with the possibility of relegation looming, Chivas Guadalajara eked out a much-needed victory over Pachuca on Saturday, 1-0. The Clausura win for Chivas gives them a five-point buffer ahead of Puebla in the relegation table.

Giovani Hernandez scored for Guadalajara from the spot after Carlos Fierro drew a foul from Colombian defender Aquivaldo Mosquera.

Highly touted youngster Erick “Cubo” Torres, who will head to the Houston Dynamo from Chivas, sat on the bench again, giving the 22-year-old just 22 minutes through this Clausura.

With this weekend’s results, Guadalajara is even with Club America at seven points, two points behind leaders Tijuana, for this season’s second championship.

AC Milan, the seven-time European champions, who share a stadium with Inter Milan, are ready to build their own home.

The Serie A powerhouse is teaming up with the designers of Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena and Beijing’s Bird Nest stadium to create a new 48,000-capacity venue, the club announced Sunday.

AC Milan has not released cost figures for the new venue yet as the plan is in very early stages, but the club hopes to relocate from San Siro for the 2018-19 season.

The new stadium will be designed to mesh with the skyline in Portello area of the city and will create 1,000 jobs during construction and 500 once completed.
