The LA Galaxy’s European visit has gotten off to a rough start.

The Galaxy played their first match on Monday since crossing the Atlantic, and were defeated, 2-1, at the hands of Swedish club Hammarby. LA wasted an early lead in the match, and was also reduced to 10 men after Juninho was shown a straight red card for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

Robbie Keane opened the scoring for the defending MLS Cup champions, converting on a penalty kick in the seventh minute. A defensive blunder allowed Hammarby to equalize four minutes later, and then Linus Hallenius found the winner two minutes after halftime.

Adding insult to injury for LA was Juninho’s ejection. The Brazilian midfielder was sent off in the 55th minute, further hindering the Galaxy’s ability to find an equalizer in the match.

RED BULLS REPORTEDLY SET TO LOOK AT HURTADO

The New York Red Bulls are still searching for centerback options, and will soon take a look at a seasoned veteran with MLS experience.

According to Big Apple Soccer, the Red Bulls are set to have Jhon Kennedy Hurtado on trial during the upcoming part of their preseason preparations. Hurtado, a 30-year-old Colombian, has been in MLS since 2009. He started out with the Seattle Sounders, but spent last season with the Chicago Fire and then Chivas USA.

The report comes on the same day that the Red Bulls formally announced that central defender Ibrahim Sekagya has retired to join their technical staff.

RAPIDS PASSED ON CHANCE TO SIGN FORLAN

If things had turned out differently, Diego Forlan might have been a member of the Colorado Rapids right now.

Forlan was presented to the Rapids as a possible signing this offseason and the club considered signing the Uruguayan striker, but talks never got too serious and Colorado turned its sights on Irish international Kevin Doyle.

“Diego Forlán — did we have a conversation about him? Yes, we did,” Rapids technical director Paul Bravo told the Denver Post. “But it’s probably the same conversation 10 other clubs in this league have had in that same time frame.”

Forlan, 35, is currently on the books of Japanese club Cerezo Osaka.

What do you think about the Galaxy’s defeat to Hammarby? Should the Rapids have signed Forlan? How much would Hurtado improve the Red Bulls if he signs?

  1. I loved Hurtado when he was in Seattle. That was quite a while ago…and to lose Olave.

What are they doing ? Going for that first draft pick in 2016 as of right now.

  2. I agree with Rapids…Forlan isn’t same player from 4 years ago. Since Forlan got injured Uruguay vs Paragua…Forlan has not been the same player. Maybe Forlan as non-DP deal.
