Herculez Gomez scores to help Puebla post Copa MX win

Herculez Gomez Puebla 22

By CAITLIN MURRAY

Herculez Gomez está en fuego.

The American abroad continues his on-fire month with Puebla, scoring yet again Tuesday night, with this latest goal being key in a 2-1 win over Mérida.

Teed up on a long free kick, Gomez tracked the ball and met it in the goal area, heading it past goalkeeper Victor Patiño in the 36th minute.

With the win, Puebla sits atop their group in the Clausura, one point ahead of Mérida and five points clear of third-place Toluca.

Gomez, 32, returned to Puebla on loan this month and has scored three times in this Clausura, giving the striker a strong start to 2015. Gomez had played for Puebla back in 2010.

  1. Why not on the Gold Cup roster? He’s played in and knows CONCACAF competition. I know it’s early but hope he continues this form to give Jurgen a tough decision.

      • yeah, himself. his twitter:

No. My time is done with the Nats RT @Missasilence: @herculezg Is it a goal of yours regaining a call up to the USMNT? #Askherc

      • Saw that reply from him. At the time, it seemed more like an acknowledgement that he believed he wasn’t getting called in anymore. Several players have come back to help their national teams. I sure hope Jurgen does give him a call.

      • There was never a formal saying he was retired from international play. Just an opinion, but Herc seems like the guy who’d come in at a minute’s notice.

      • how much more clear could he be:

“No. My time is done with the Nats”

that sounds like a guy who is done with the Nats…

      • And that may be so. Just an optimist as it could also be he doesn’t expect to get called in anymore, which he probably will not as JK is really fazing out the old guard. What if he does on a scoring tear in La Liga and Jurgen asks him about the Gold Cup? He may want that chance again. You never know.

  2. Quibbling over grammar, which I know is frowned upon on this site (and others), but the correct verb is “estar” not “ser”. Herculez está en fuego.

I’ve always loved Herc, ever since he made a splash by scoring a goal against the Galaxy while playing for a San Diego minor, minor, minor league team. He then stormed onto MLS and was absolutely en fuego his first year. At a playoff game when the Galaxy eliminated the San Jose Earthquakes (right before moving to Houston) I came within inches of grabbing his jersey that he threw into the crowd of LA fans. Le sigh…

    • Yeah, I agree. Herc’s biological make up and permanent condition is not literally “fuego,” although he’s been playing like it is. But wouldn’t it be a wonder of science if he was?

    • I totally agree. I have a suspicion that Wondo is a ‘Yes, coach,’ kind of guy, though, and JK likes having at least one of those around on every roster.

      • i think that is a well known fact! not just a personal suspicion..

that and Wondo is a great guy to put on your CB’s in training. he is a pesky guy to keep track of in the box.

during a Gold Cup game Wondo or Herc.. thats a good question. Always been a fan of Herc, if he is in form and healthy again id pick him
