Just one day after signing a contract to stay with New York Red Bulls, Mike Grella found the back of the net. Unfortunately for the team, it wasn’t enough.
Grella provided a finish in the 36th minute, but the Red Bulls were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with Denmark’s HB Koge at the IMG Suncoast Pro Classic in Bradenton, Florida.
The Red Bulls forward’s 36th minute finish was kickstarted by fellow offseason addition Felipe, who played in fullback Roy Miller with a through ball. The Costa Rican then squared for Grella, who finished from close range to give the Red Bulls a 1-0 lead.
That lead lasted until the the 62nd minute when Koge’s Philip Zinckernagel caught the Red Bulls on a quick break to level the scoreline.
The Red Bulls take the field against the Oklahoma City Energy to continue the IMG Suncoast Pro Classic in Bradenton.
Here are some more of Wednesday’s MLS news and notes:
DYNAMO FALL TO AZTEX
The Houston Dynamo were undefeated in their preseason preparations heading into Wednesday before falling to a local rival.
Done in by an own goal, the Dynamo settled for a loss to the Austin Aztex, who claimed the 1-0 victory. The win handed former Dynamo player and assistant coach Paul Dalglish, now head coach of the Aztex, some bragging rights against his former employer.
The Dynamo intially appeared to have opened the scoring in the 38th minute through Will Bruin, who provided a finish only to see it ruled offside. The game remained scoreless until the 86th minute, when new signing Raul Rodriguez saw his sliding block trickle into the back of the net.
Following the loss, the Dynamo will be back in action Saturday against the Charleston Battery in the Carolina Challenge Cup.
CREW PUSH SEVEN PAST LONDON UNITED
The Columbus Crew brought their shooting boots to Bradenton, Florida.
Kei Kamara and Hernan Grana each netted braces, as the Crew routed London United, 7-0 in the Suncoast Classic. Six of the goals came in the first half, and Grana also provided two assists on the aftenroon
Joining the duo on the scoresheet were Ethan Finlay, Chris Klute and Sagi Lev-Ari.
The Crew return to action Saturday against the Costa Rica U-23s.
IMPACT ROUT FC CUAUTLA
Much like the Crew, the Montreal Impact spent plenty of Wednesday afternoon finding the back of the net.
Jack McInerney and Cameron Porter each scored twice to lead the Impact to a 6-0 victory over FC Cuautla of the Mexican third division. Also scoring on the day was first round draft pick Romario Williams, who was joined by Blake Smith among the goalscorers.
The Impact, who are currently in Mexico, continue preparations ahead of the team’s Feb. 24 CONCACAF Champions League matchup with Pachuca.
THOMPSON SCORES AS EARTHQUAKES TOP FUEGO
Tommy Thompson led the way to an Earthquakes victory Wednesday.
The 19-year-old forward provided a goal and an assist Wednesday as the Earhquakes topped the PDL’s Fresno Fuego, 4-0.
Thompson played provider for the game’s opening goal by placing a through-ball onto the feet of Mike Fucito in the 28th minute. Just two minutes later, Thompson scored a goal of his own via a diving header.
The Earthquakes, who also saw goals from Adam Jahn and Sanna Nyassi, return Saturday to take on Sacramento Republic.
LE TOUX BRACE LEADS UNION OVER COSTA RICA U-23s
Sebastian Le Toux provided a goal in both halves to lead the Philadelphia Union to victory.
The Frenchman kicked off the day with a 10th minute penalty kick finish before adding another in the 51st minute as the Union picked up a 3-0 victory over the Costa Rica U-23s. The Union’s other finish came via Cristian Maidana, who banged home a pass from Andrew Wenger in the 22nd.
The Union are set to take on London United on Saturday.

OKC Energy beat Toronto 1-0 in Bradenton as well.
hoping this year is a break -out year for TT, we’ll miss him for probably a month during the U-20 World Cup, but should be a big year for him regardless.
Re: Fucito- I love the fight from ‘Harvard’, just wish he could score some league goals when given the chance.
Good Job Grella……
All hail, the Church of Mike Fucito!
Hmmm…if I had to guess, I’d say that Ives was a NY Red Bull fan and if I had to pick an EPL affiliation I’d say Arsenal or (oppositely) Tottenham Hotspur. Just a guess…
Ives says he doesn’t root for any club. This website started as a Red Bulls website and Franco Panizo is the RBNY beat writer for the MLS website so that may explain why there are more articles about RBNY than some other teams.
Not gonna lie, that clears up a lot for me. I’ve been following this site for only 5 years, and I’ve wondered why the NY bias. I guess it’s not really bias – just doing their job.
