Still searching for a permanent home, Omar Cummings made a case for himself against a former employer.

Portland Timbers trialist and former Houston Dynamo striker Cummings scored the equalizing goal in a 1-1 draw with the Dynamo in Tucson. Cummings came on in the final 30 minutes squad, but needed just 10 minutes to make an impact.

Cummings bounced on a lose ball in the 69th minute before finishing into the low right corner and scoring against his former club.

The Dynamo took the lead through Leonel Miranda, on loan from Argentine club Independiente. The midfielder led a Dynamo counter-attack down the right side before firing in a shot from just outside the box in the 48th minute.

Both teams will stay in Arizona for the Desert Friendlies series. The Dynamo play the Vancouver Whitecaps while The Timbers takes on the San Jose Earthquakes on Feb. 10.

Here are more recaps from Saturday’s preseason action:

EARTHQUAKES DRAW WHITECAPS

The Earthquakes succumbed to a second half Whitecaps effort for a 1-1 draw in the other match in Tucson.

Kekuta Manneh capped a much improved Whitecaps performance in the 65th minute by taking Sam Adekugbe’s pass at the top of the box before applying the finish. Both players came on in a completely brand new second half squad.

David Ousted did as much as possible to keep things level for Vancouver, but he was unable to keep everything out. His save from Adam Jahn’s header turned into a goal for Paulo Renato on the ensuing corner in the 28th minute.

ARMADA FIRES PAST PHILADELPHIA

North American Soccer League’s newest addition, Jacksonville Armada FC, made its first ever game a memorable one.

An NASL preseason record crowd of 13,943 witnessed a 3-1 Armada FC victory against the Philadelphia Union. All four goals occurred in the first-half, with Jacksonville benefiting from early dominance.

Just eight minutes in, Fabricio Ortiz handed the home team a 1-0 advantage by finishing off a poor Union clearance. Alhassane Keita doubled their advantage just a few minutes later.

Philadelphia’s only goal came when Sheanon Williams won a tackle at midfield and played in Andrew Wenger. He finished easily into an open net in the 24th minute.

A converted penalty gave Jacksonville fans one more reason to cheer just before halftime.

HARRIS SCORES IN FCD DRAW

In their final game at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, FC Dallas tied 1-1 with Swedish second division side Jonkopings Sodra IF.

In his second stint with the club, Atiba Harris scored Dallas’ first goal of the 2015 preseason with about 10 minutes left until halftime. Jonkopings equalized just minutes later.

Dallas returns to Texas for the remainder of preseason. They play Columbus Crew SC at the ATX Pro Soccer Challenge in Austin on Feb. 13.

  1. Not to nitpick, but I’m kinda curious how the photo showing the Timbers game features two players who are recovering from injuries and one player who’s been traded. Not a timely choice of file photos.
