Soccer Wednesday: Your Running Commentary

Real Madrid CF v Real Sociedad de Futbol - La Liga

By AYDIN REYHAN

Real Madrid can strengthen its hold on first place in La Liga with a win against Sevilla today, but will have to do so without Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese star is serving the second match of his red card suspension, leaving the reigning UEFA Champions League winners to try and extend their lead on Barcelona to four points without the services of their best player, and against a dangerous opponent. Sevilla has won four of five matches though, and will provide a stiff test for a Madrid side that just might have an eye on the weekend derby against Atletico.

The semifinals of the African Cup of Nations begin today with the Democratic Republic of Congo facing Yaya Toure and Ivory Coast. In South America, the continent’s Under-20 World Cup qualifying tournament continues with a trio of matches, including first-place Uruguay battling third-place Colombia.

Cup action resumes in Europe with Liverpool visiting the Reebok to take on Bolton in a fourth-round FA Cup replay. The sides wound up in a 0-0 tie at Anfield, and now Tim Ream and the Trotters will try to pull off the latest FA Cup shocker.

Meanwhile, in Italy, Napoli is hosting Inter Milan in a Coppa Italia quarterfinal.

    • And what a pass from Stevie G. The way Gerrard is still playing, it looks like the Galaxy made one of the best signings in January in MLS.
