The Philadelphia Union have revealed the extent of the injury C.J. Sapong picked up in the season opener.

The club announced on Wednesday that Sapong suffered a concussion and a fractured cheekbone during the first half of the Union’s game against Colorado Rapids on Saturday. The forward is now due to see a specialist, where the length of his anticipated time on the sidelines will be determined.

The injury occurred late in the first half, with Christian Maidana coming on to replace Sapong after halftime.

The 26-year-old forward was acquired by the Union from Sporting Kansas City in exchange for the 10th pick in the 2015 MLS Draft.

What do you think of the news? How will the Union fare without Sapong?

  1. FFS Joe, as the guy posted above, Sjoberg is 6’7 what is he supposed to do, give up free headers, let the guys run free in on goal, Sapong Jumped into Sjoberg

  2. @MMV. Sure. Inadvertently. All 40 or 50 times. Yeah the Kung Foo kick to the back was icing on the Pablo cake. He was a marginally talented thug. Why should his team play any differently?

    • An inadvertent elbow. Absolutely no intent whatsoever. Sjoberg is all of 6’7″ and his arms were raised in a normal fashion when challenging for a ball. He not leading with arms/elbow. It was an unfortunate incident. Northing more; nothing less. It happens. I do feel for Sapong, though. I am a Rapids fan and I’ll be to admit we played far too rough and tumble. I did not like it. The incident you should be focusing on is James Riley’s karate kick into the back of a Philly player late in the 2nd half. That’s thuggish. The incident with Sapong was purely incidental.
