If Real Madrid hopes to advance beyond the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal, it will have to do something unprecedented for this season: beat Atletico Madrid.
In seven matches against their crosstown rival this season, Los Blancos have failed to win a single contest. Real Madrid has lost four and drawn three, including a scoreless battle at the Vicente Calderon during the first leg. In three matches at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, Atleti has won once and drawn twice.
Real Madrid will be forced to overcome that recent history on Wednesday despite a spate of injuries to marquee players (2:45 p.m., Fox Sports 1). Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Karim Benzema have all been ruled out of the tie.
Meanwhile, in Monaco, the home side will attempt to turn around a 1-0 deficit against Juventus.
Neither club has reached the semifinals within the past decade. Monaco’s last appearance came in 2004 and the Italian giant’s most recent berth came the year prior. But Wednesday’s match provides both sides with a chance to update their respective history books.
While Juventus enjoys a slight cushion entering the match, picking up an away goal will no doubt be on The Old Lady’s mind. But to do it, Juve will have to find a way past a stout Monaco defense that has allowed just 12 goals at home this season.
Though Monaco has been suffocating defensively, the club will have to cast aside its struggle to produce goals in order to advance. Through nine Champions League matches, Les Rouges et Blancs have found the back of the net just seven times.
