Americans Abroad: Weekend Preview

VenturaAlvarado1

By FRANCO PANIZO

From playing the No. 12-ranked nation in the world to the fourth-placed side in Liga MX, things are not slowing down any for Ventura Alvarado.

Fresh off playing in his first two games at the international level with the U.S. Men’s National Team, Alvarado will attempt to overcome any potential jet lag and make his way back into Club America’s lineup on Saturday vs. Cruz Azul. America is looking to bounce back from a 4-0 defeat to Veracruz on March 20 and solidify a place in the playoffs, and a win at home could help push the fifth-placed Eagles to as high as third with five games remaining in the season. The club may choose to rest Alvarado, however, as it is in need of a big rally against Herediano in the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals next Wednesday.

While Alvarado is aiming to help his side move up the table, Alfredo Morales is looking to keep his at the top of its respective league. Ingolstadt is in a bit of a funk after winning just once in its last six games, and only three points separate the club from second-placed Kaiserslautern. Morales should slide back into his regular place in Ingolstadt’s lineup when it hosts FSV Frankfurt on Sunday, and the midfielder should be high on confidence after earning a start and going the distance for the U.S. earlier this week.

If you’re wondering what other match might be worth watching, look no further than Stoke City’s visit to English Premier League leaders Chelsea on Sunday. Geoff Cameron should be refreshed after being left with the Potters during the international break, and will attempt to earn his 15th start of the campaign. Cameron and Stoke will be eager for a result, as they are stuck on 42 points after having dropped each of their last two matches.

    • Yo, can anyone tell me if Stuart Holden will ever play again??? I see he’s found a new gig analyzing USMNT games recently(and pretty well I might add) but I haven’t seen anything on his time table for a return or if he’ll return at all!
