VfL Wolfsburg beat Inter Milan handily in the Europa League Round of 16, but the German side didn’t have the same such luck in their quarterfinal home leg against another Serie A squad.

Marek Hamsik and Gonzalo Higuain led the way in a dominant performance by Napoli, which scored scored four away goals en route to a 4-1 victory at the Volkswagen Arena in Wolfsburg.

Higuain opened scoring in the 15th minute and then played Hamsik through for the eventual winner in the 23rd minute. Hamsik added a second tally in the 64th minute, and then Manolo Gabbiadini made it a four-goal lead before Nicklas Bendtner drew one back late for the hosts.

Elsewhere in Europa League quarterfinal action, Europa League holders Sevilla scored twice in the final 17 minutes — including an 88th-minute stunner by Barcelona loanee Denis Suarez — to come back for a 2-1 at home against Zenit St. Petersburg.

Aleksandr Ryazantsev followed his own shot to put the Russians ahead in the 29th minute, but Sevilla substitute Carlos Bacca headed home in the 73rd minute to level the score. The 21-year-old Suarez struck the ball out of the air from the edge of the box for a terrific late goal.

It’s worth noting that Zenit was missing Hulk due to suspension for the first leg of the matchup.

The two other Europa League matches on Thursday both ended in a draw, although one more in more exciting fashion than the other.

Substitute Khouma Babacar saved the day for Fiorentina out in Ukraine, scoring in second half stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 away draw against Dynamo Kiev.

The quarterfinal matchup between Club Brugge and Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk ended up in a 0-0 draw in Belgium. Brugge goalie Maty Ryan made four saves in the shutout, including three shots on target by Dnipro’s Yevhen Konoplyanka.

What did you think of Thursday’s Europa League action? Did Napoli clinch its spot in the semifinals or can Wolfsburg come all the back? What did you think of Suarez’s winner?

  1. So much for Seria A in crisis…I would expect at least 2out of 3 Seria A teams to go through to the semis, maybe even all 3…Juventus will have a difficult task in Monaco, no doubt.

Say all you want about the fat Spanish waiter, but Benitez is a master class in those knockout European competitions…well done to him and Napoli today.
