A streak ended at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday, but it wasn’t the one that Colorado Rapids were hoping to see end.
The New England Revolution’s 2-0 win marked the first time the club has claimed victory inside the stadium in seven attempts. The Rapids, however, have now gone through 18 games without a win, tying the MLS record, and have yet to score this season.
Juan Agudelo’s 18th minute strike from Kelyn Rowe’s perfectly weighted long ball broke the deadlock for the Revs, before a converted penalty for Lee Nguyen sealed the deal.
Another goalless night for Colorado did not come for a lack of trying, as Marcelo Sarvas and Gabriel Torres worked in tandem. Five shots on target were saved by the Revs’ Bobby Shuttleworth, and the Rapids hit the goal frame on three occasions.
A controversial call that resulted in what appeared to be a penalty kick for the Rapids being overturned in the second half only added to the home side’s woes. The would-be penalty call was negated by an offside call.
Plenty of chances came and went for the Rapids, but it wasn’t always a case of poor finishing. Shuttleworth came up big for New England, including a momentum-saving stop as the first half ended.
Down a goal, the Rapids pushed forward through Juan Ramirez, whose low cross to the middle found a streaking Dillon Powers. The winger took a touch before trying to poke a shot past Shuttleworth, but the goalkeeper’s left arm extended to somehow deflect the ball up and over the bar.
He had another big save minutes into the second half, sending Sarvas’ point-blank header at the back post up and away to preserve the shutout. Breaching the Rapids’ goal was slightly easier.
After sparking the Revs’ offense into action last week, Kelyn Rowe continued the trend with a long ball that put Agudelo behind the defense in the 18th minute. He controlled the pass before putting the bouncing ball over an outstretched Irwin and off the underside of the bar for a 1-0 lead.
It was 2-0 about 10 minutes into the second half when Charlie Davies was brought down in the box by Rapids defender Jared Watts. Nguyen dispatched the penalty, doubling the agony for home fans and players.
The Rapids must have known it wasn’t their night around the 60 minute mark, just after rookie striker Dominique Badji entered the game. Badji nearly made an immediate impact when he controlled the ball — possibly handling it in the process — and sent a shot clanging off the far left post.
The rebound rolled to Sarvas, who was subsequently taken down to bring a penalty call from the referee. However, the ball rolled through to Torres who was in an offside position, and the assistant’s flag went up.
Despite first calling the penalty, the referee reversed his decision and called for a free kick the other way. Incensed, Rapids’ coach Pablo Mastroeni took off down the touchline toward the linesman, and he was subsequently sent away from the bench area.
More chances came and went. With about 15 minutes remaining, Bobby Burling headed the ball off the left post before just missing on his follow-up effort. In stoppage time, Torres had a curling shot to the far right post go inches wide.
Now without a goal in four games, the Rapids must try to break that streak on the road against FC Dallas on Friday. New England hosts Columbus Crew next on Saturday afternoon.
Was at the game. Charlie Davies was brought down in the sense that Watts touched him slightly, and the wind did the rest.
When the team was good two years ago, the fans came to the games. The fact is the stadium is in a terrible location, KSE continues to be thrifty, and Pablo has no idea what he is doing. Even the DPs we finally signed are hardly world beaters. If we signed a recognizable player and didn’t take on MLS rejects, then the fans would come.
Rapids are a classic case of why you need pro/rel. What incentives does this team have to invest and improve, even when they were good they got little fan support in Denver. Now they are just a zombie franchise doing just the minimum.
So you’re saying the problem with the rapids isn’t the lack of ownership involvement, money spent on quality players, or lack of marketing promotion within the city. It all rests on the fans? Greater attendance leads to a better team.
It’s worked so well for the Rockies. Our World Series victory is right around the corner! They need promotion/relegation on these comment boards.
Just buy some players. Good lord its disrespectful to the league, fans and the game itself to have a salary structure below the pittance MLS offers. Pathetic. I feel bad for the league and the fans of this team.
The gap between the haves and have nots in this league is going to widen and get more difficult over time.
This is probably the most competitive league in the world, top to bottom. Gap between haves and have nots? Are you kidding? Unbelievable goal by Agudelo to bring that ball down at full stretch with the flick, angled chip. Amazing stuff, but we know he’s capable of the occasional special goal. I want to see if he can consistently score the ordinary goal, to make the smart runs and get on the end of balls, consistently hit the corners, find the spaces like a true goal scorer. I hope so.
More of the ordinary goals really is what he needs to work on.
