European Weekend Rewind: Chelsea close to EPL title; Barca, Real cruise; and more

The domestic and cup action resumed this weekend in Europe’s top five leagues as we saw some expected as well as surprising results.

Chelsea blanked Manchester United 1-0 to extend their lead above the third-placed side to 11, 10 above second-placed Arsenal. The title is all but in the bag with the remaining Premier League games.

Real Madrid continued to chase Barcelona with a 3-1 victory over Malaga. However, there were two casualties as Gareth Bale picked up a knock early on while Luka Modric is set to be out for the next six weeks after being injured yet again.

Inter Milan and AC Milan shared the spoils as they held one another scoreless in a tactically-sane derby.

ENGLAND:

Manchester City returned to winning ways with a 2-0 clean sheet over West Ham United thanks to Sergio Aguero and an own-goal by Jason Collins. This puts them only one point behind Manchester United in fourth with 64.

Tottenham jumped up to sixth with 57 points, level with fifth-placed Liverpool but behind on goal-differential, when they defeated Newcastle 3-1 on the road. They are looking for a top-five finish at worst.

Aston Villa surprised all when they came from behind to defeat Liverpool 2-1 in their FA Cup semifinal meeting to set up a date with Arsenal at Wembley. The Gunners are looking to win the competition for the second-straight year.

Barcelona blanked Valencia 2-0 in a game where the visitors were unable to capitalize from the spot, Lionel Messi scored his 400th total Barcelona goal and Luis Suarez found the back of the net yet again. They are still two points in front of Real Madrid in the standings atop La Liga.

Atletico Madrid is now four points above Valencia in the standings in third as they won 2-1 in Deportivo.

Sevilla is one point closer to fourth as they drew, 1-1, in Granada. This was a game where the visitors created more chances, but one point was all they could manage.

Bayern Munich is now 12 points ahead of Wolfsburg atop the Bundesliga table as they blanked Hofenheim 2-0 on the road where as the Wolves were held 1-1 at home by Schalke.

Bayer Leverkusen ripped Hannover by a score of 4-0 as Stefan Kiessling stole the show with a goal and assist.

Borussia Dortmund blanked Paderborn 3-0 in the first game played by the club after realizing Jurgen Klopp will be departing the club at the end of the season.

Juventus is now 15 points clear at the summit of Serie A after defeating second-placed Lazio 2-0 at home. Carlos Tevez and Leonardo Bonucci both found the back of the net in the first half to decide the matter.

Roma is now tied with Lazio on points after drawing 1-1 at home against Atalanta, while Napoli crushed Cagliari 3-0 on the road to climb within five points of third-placed Roma.

Marseille sits in fourth with 57 points after dropping all three points at Nantes, while Lyon shared the spoils with fifth-placed Saint Etienne after tying, 2-2, at home.
