Manchester City may have close ties with New York City FC, but that won’t prevent the reigning Premier League champions from facing off with another MLS opponent this May.

Man City announced Wednesday that the club will play a friendly against Toronto FC on May 27 at BMO Field. The club traveled to North America last season for matches in Kansas City, Pitsburgh, Minneapolis and New York.

The friendly will see TFC host Premier League opposition for the second straight season, as Tottenham Hotspur paid a visit to BMO Field in July 2014.

“We are very excited to play Manchester City at BMO Field this season,” TFC General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement. “Hosting a club like Manchester City is a great opportunity for our players to compete against one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Man City most recently visited Canada in 2011 for a friendly with the Vancouver Whitecaps, part of a three-game North American tour.

“We are very excited about the game against Toronto FC,” said chief executive Ferran Soriano. “We know from our visit to Vancouver in 2011 the passion for the club which exists in Canada. We have a very active supporters group in Toronto, and are looking forward to bringing our team to showcase their talents to our fans there.”

What do you think of the upcoming friendly? Plan to attend? What other teams would you like see come to North America this summer?

  1. Good, sell NYCFC and buy Toronto. Two teams that try to spend their way to championships and fail miserably.

    The lampard curse lives.

      • You are going to see a lot of that. Guys hoping for a big European league team or Cosmos of the 70s type team domination. One where the fans can front run and be a casual superfan.

Now they realize: THEY HAVE AN EXPANSION TEAM…and a very mediocre one at that.

And now they have to fight to make the playoffs with everyone else.

  2. How about we make the playoffs one season then we can worry about friendlies. We’re off to a crappy start again and having Manchester City beat up on us isn’t going to improve our confidence or help us be well rested for our upcoming games.
