Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

FBL-FRA-LIGUE1-PSG-OM

By ADAM TROXTELL

A big weekend in the Ligue 1 title race reaches a climax this afternoon when Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille meet at the Stade Velodrome.

Marseille will try to avoid a repeat from the last time the teams met in November, when PSG ran out 2-0 winners. The defending champions can return to the top of the Ligue 1 standings with a victory, and they have not lost to Marseille since November of 2011.

Lyon moved into first with a win against Guingamp yesterday. While Marseille can’t take first place with a victory of its own, the club can throw an extra wrench into the title fight and pull within one point of the leaders.

A Northeast derby highlights the day’s action in England when Newcastle and Sunderland clash. The relegation-threatened Black Cats have recorded four-straight victories against their northern neighbors.

Valencia can maintain an advantage in the race for UEFA Champions League spots in La Liga with a win against Villarreal. Title-chasing Barcelona and Real Madrid are also both in action today.

If you will be watching any of today’s action, feel free to leave your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

      • or in real life, oddly enough volleys are one of Jozy’s strong points. he may not blow by someone off the dribble, may not have a consistent first touch but he can rip a shot or first time volley. most of his coaches have all pointed that out, saying how wonderful his shot is in training and that they just need to find a way to get him the ball, etc….

that said, great goal by Defoe. happy for him.

    • Why? Because they gave an American player every possible chance to succeed?
I’d rather thank them for spending the time and money on a players that just wasn’t good enough.

      • Let’s not pretend that is not a terrible that creates almost zero chances. Jozy should have done better (6 goals on that team would have been a success). At least, Dick Advocaat has them playing with possession.

However, given the unnecessary scapegoating Jozy got, I do hope the fans get what they deserve a relegated team. I was actually hoping the would get relegated the 1st season Jozy was there so he could get released. I just never thought he belonged there

      • or you can take the normal route and NOT hope they get relegated BUT laugh at the narrative when they inevitably do…..

their goal was created by their gk….. repeat, their gk got the hockey assist on the goal….. the evidence still supports the “no service” claim.

    • Sunderland will win. Newcastle has nothing to play for And they dont even try when they dont. Good chance they lose the rest of their games.
