After taking part in last season’s MLS All-Star Game as a member of the hosts, DeAndre Yedlin is set to return to the event this year as a member of the opposition.

Major League Soccer announced Wednesday that Tottenham will be the opponent for the MLS All-Star Game, which is scheduled for July 29 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, home of the Colorado Rapids.

“The AT&T MLS All-Star Game continues to be one of the most entertaining and widely anticipated traditions for our league and for our sport in North America,” MLS president and deputy commissioner Mark Abbott said in a statement. “We are excited to welcome another world-class opponent in Tottenham and look forward to a competitive match and a tremendous week of events.

“We know that the Colorado Rapids, one of our inaugural clubs, will be great hosts and that Dick’s Sporting Goods Park will impress both the fans in the stadium and television viewers throughout the world.”

Tottenham is the latest European team to partake in the festivities, joining Manchester United, Everton, Chelsea, Roma and Bayern Munich. The club traveled to the U.S. in the team’s most recent preseason, playing in Seattle, Toronto and Chicago.

“We’d like to thank Major League Soccer for the invitation to take part in the 2015 All-Star Game,” Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino said in a statement. “The fact that this will be our only fixture outside of Europe during preseason says a lot about how we view this game. We enjoyed three tough matches last summer in North America and the quality of football in MLS continues to grow every year.

“Preseason is an important time for us and we are looking forward to being a part of one of the biggest events on the US football calendar. We know the quality of the facilities will be top-class and we see this fixture against the best players from MLS as good preparation.”

This is the second time Dick’s Sporting Goods Park has hosted the All-Star Game. In 2007, it was the venue when the All-Star team played Scottish club Celtic.

What do you think of the announcement? Excited to see Tottenham? Which players are you most looking forward to seeing?

  1. Ironic, given the speculation that the Kroenke tie would bring in Arsenal. Given how much later this was announced than last year I wonder if someone else dropped out. Or maybe they just wanted to wait until Pep’s hissy fit died down.

    • Maybe they had to interview the coaches to see which one wouldn’t be an ——— when/if he lost?

  2. I am glad to see that they are going with a good team, but not a great one. Bringing in world class clubs who give the MLS all start (with only a day or two of practice) a complete drubbing was getting old. I will definitely watch this as it could get interesting. If they schedule Barca, Man U. Bayern, etc I am not even going to bother.

    • Pretty funny comment considering they beat Bayern in last year’s ASG. Actually they’ve won 5 and drawn 1 out of 9 ASGs against foreign clubs. ManU did beat them heavily twice which was probably the last GJJ paid attention to the ASG, if ever.

      • This is indeed hilarity…when you’ve said something so wrongheaded even slowleftarm and Quit Whining About Soccer in the US are in accord that you’re being a knothead, you’ve achieved something.

        Well done! 😉
