On attempt number five, LA Galaxy II finally tasted victory.

Los Dos triumphed, 2-1, at home to Austin Aztex late Sunday for their first win of the season, taking them out of last place in the Western Conference. Raul Mendiola scored the winner in the 84th minute, four minutes after Sainey Touray equalized for the visitors.

Before that, Mendiola provided the opener. In the 64th minute, he cut the ball back to Ariel Lassiter, who shifted onto his left foot and swerved the ball into the net for his second goal in as many games. It was Mendiola’s league-leading fourth assist of the season.

Defensive lapses that have led to late, game-deciding goals appeared again for Los Dos with ten minutes to go. Touray took advantage of a loose ball in the defensive third to score the equalizer.

Mendiola connected on a pass inside the box from Ryo Fujii, made space for himself and then fired a shot into the net to send Los Dos fans home happy.

Galaxy II heads on the road to play Real Monarchs on Saturday, while Austin Aztex will try to bounce back against Colorado Springs Switchbacks at home that same day.

Here are more recaps from last week’s USL action:

LATE KONIG EFFORT SENDS SOUNDERS 2 HOME EMPTY HANDED

After a loss to Tulsa Roughnecks in the middle of the week, Seattle Sounders FC 2 hoped to get at least something out of its trip down the highway to face Oklahoma City Energy FC.

Darwin Jones scored his fourth goal of the season in the 33rd minute to give Sounders 2 a solid start after the game had been delayed due to thunderstorms in the area at kickoff.  Just five minuets later, the game was level again through Chuy Sanchez’s first goal of the season.

Danish striker Danni Konig copied his efforts from Colorado Springs a few weeks back to hand Energy FC the winner. A low cross into the area missed everyone but Konig, who slotted home with his first touch in the 86th minute.

Energy FC remains at home to next face Saint Louis FC on Saturday. Sounders 2 face another road trip, though it is in more familiar territory with a trip across the border to face Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 on Sunday.

BATTERY, RED BULLS II BATTLE TO DRAW

Though they remain unbeaten this season, the Charleston Battery were knocked off of the top spot in the East courtesy of an Anatole Abang header.

The 18-year old Cameroonian striker equalized for New York Red Bulls II in the 68th minute to finish the game in a 1-1 draw. Sean Davis whipped in the free kick, and Abang rose up to nod the ball home after the Battery had opened the scoring.

Memo Rodriguez scored just before halftime when his deflected shot looped up and into the net. The result leaves the Battery second in the Eastern Conference, one point behind the Rochester Rhinos. NYRB II climbed to fifth.

Red Bulls II returns home to face the Richmond Kickers on Wednesday, while the Battery play Wilmington Hammerheads on the road in a Sunday afternoon kickoff.

SACRAMENTO DOWNS T2 FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

The defending USL champions are rolling now.

Sacramento Republic FC claimed its third straight win at home with a 3-0 victory against Portland Timbers 2. Rodrigo Lopez scored his fifth goal of the season to get things going in the 13th minute, and Republic FC only looked forward from there.

Michael Daly made it 2-0 in the 37th minute before Zev Taublieb scored with eight minutes to go for the dagger. The victory avenges a 2-1 result for T2 the last time the teams met at the beginning of April.

Sacramento plays Orange County Blues next in a Friday night matchup, while T2 takes on Arizona United in another road trip on Saturday.
