As it turns out, the injury to the San Jose Earthquakes’ star forward was anything but innocent.

The Earthquakes announced Thursday that Designated Player Innocent Emeghara will miss four to six months after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus.

Emeghara’s injury was suffered in the Earthquakes’ May 1 meeting with Real Salt Lake, forcing the forward off in the 57th minute.

The Swiss forward signed for the Earthquakes this past offseason, joining Chris Wondolowski and Matías Pérez García as the club’s Designated Players. Prior to his injury, Emeghara started six of the Earthquakes’ first eight matches and scored in a March 14 upset of the Seattle Sounders.

What do you think of this news? How do you see the Earthquakes faring without Emeghara? What tactical changes do you expect the team to make in his absence?

  1. 4-6 MONTHS for a meniscus seems incredibly long. That’s generally the prognosis for a torn ACL.

I’ve done both, myself. I’m no professional athlete (nor a doctor), but meniscus should be closer to 4-6 WEEKS.

  2. The Earthquakes front office needs to do better scouting. The players they get from abroad tend to be injury prone like Gorlitz. Also the culture seems to indicate the expectation that you get yourself into harms way to appear aggressive. Wondo doesn’t do that. He is smart. The league has a propensity for injurious moves. In this context mentioning Prince Boateng as a possible player for the Red Bulls is an example. There are some players who are known to attack with the intention to hurt, and that needs to be stopped.

Regarding what the Earthquakes should do? They are going to be fine. They need to use Tommy Thompson more and Adam John less. Adam Jahn should play more in the midfield. He could be the Bradley of the Earthquakes.

  3. I actually think the Quakes are going to be fine without him and steadily improve…poor DP signing Imo. I wish him a speedy recovery and would never wish any ill will towards him, but his injury could be a blessing in disguise.

  4. This club now officially has no “quality”. Just a glorified college team. Physical long ball with no imagination.

    • That sums up pretty much very Earthquakes team I can ever remember. They’re like the Stoke of the MLS. Which is saying something.

      • I think David Kaval actually said the he’s modeling the club after EPL grinder teams like Stoke. Basically said that he admired those clubs for their lack of top tier talent, and their ability to just grind out wins.

Which for us Quakes fans translates to: I’m cheap.

  5. Shame. He looks like the real deal. Young, hard working attacking player. Good DP. The other two… dangit, Kaval.
