Earthquakes to face Manchester United July 21 at California Memorial Stadium

When the schedule for this summer’s International Champions Cup was released, there was one game that was left to be determined. Plans for that game have now been finalized.

The San Jose Earthquakes will host Manchester United on July 21 at the California Memorial Stadium. The matchup will be the second to be hosted at the stadium in as many years following last season’s clash between Real Madrid and Inter Milan.

“The Earthquakes have competed in nearly every major venue in the Bay Area and now we are excited to play at California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley,” said Earthquakes President Dave Kaval. “To be able to play a well-known and respected team such as Manchester United at this great venue is a tremendous opportunity for our club and our fans.”

In addition to the Manchester United match, the Earthquakes will also host Club America, who will travel to Avaya Stadium on July 14. The tournament will also feature the LA Galaxy, New York Red Bulls, Chelsea, Paris-Saint Germain, Barcelona, Fiorentina and Porto.

What do you think of the announcement? Plan on attending? Which International Champions Cup match are you most excited for?

  1. With all the stadiums in the Bay Area they choose the one with an artificial pitch that is super-narrow? Literally every other large stadium (Levi’s, Stanford, Oakland Coliseum, AT&T) has natural grass and a wide enough pitch. I’m surprised Man Utd is agreeing to play at Memorial.

  2. As someone mentioned you would have to be a fanboy to go to this game. Man U has two players right now worth paying to see and that’s Di Maria and Valencia and I guess Memphis Delphay if they have him now. But are those guys actually going to play.

  3. I don’t know if Quakes season ticket holders get this match included or have the chance to buy tix at face value but PL fanboys will pay absurd prices to watch their teams. Made enough selling my RBNY-Arsenal tix last year to almost pay for this year’s season tickets.

    • The game is not included in our season tickets but we do get first crack at buying tickets before the general pubic. Can also make good cash selling tickets for the game vs. Club America.

  4. ManU fanboys will be paying $150 or more to watch a bunch of jerseys with number 70s and 80s on the back jog around on the pitch. No wonder these clubs come to the U.S. every summer.

  5. So neither their brand new soccer stadium nor the brand new football stadium down the road is going to be used for this. Memorial stadium isn’t a bad place but it certainly couldn’t have been the first choice.

    • Or you can just hang out on Tightwad Hill and huff Mary Jane with the hippies. For free. 😉

Seriously, though, it’s a small, SMALL pitch for soccer…which plays into the Quakes’ hands since they’re sort of built to keep everything in a shoebox and then let Wondo poach a couple. Man U could wind up surprised if they’re not expecting it like that time a few years back when they got jacked by a Kansas City Wiz team with 10 men…it will not be a pretty game. And unlike LA Galaxy, San Jose is probably not completely bored with these high-profile friendlies and will actually likely show up.
