Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

Paris Saint-Germain can seal yet another Ligue 1 title today.

Only Montpellier stands between PSG and three points that will mathematically make them champions of France for the third consecutive season. The Parisians have won their last nine league games in a row, propelling them up the table to first place and six points ahead of nearest challengers Lyon.

Five teams are technically still fighting off relegation in the English Premier League, and two of them meet at the Stadium of Light as Sunderland hosts Leicester City. If the Black Cats win and northeast neighbor Newcastle is victorious against already relegated QPR, then Hull would become the third and final team to go down unless the Tigers can win on the road against Tottenham.

Freiburg is also hoping for a favorable result to assure survival in the Bundesliga against Bayern Munich. In Mexico, Club America faces Pachuca in a quarterfinal first leg.

  1. MB is a great practician of compact soccer at club and national level. MB always runs towards the location of the ball in support.

  2. Seattle Sounders insists on possession with 20 passes until they turn it over. Kinda pointless, eh? Possession with no purpose. I would rather see 5 passes and a missed shot in the penalty area. Too bad for Vancouver. Vancouver plays better than what the scoreline shows.

  3. Altidore out with a hamstring again, also early in the match – with NE Revs – I wish we could have input from an expert in this area – is there a reason why this is happening to him? – he is a lot more bulky (not fat but muscles) than he used to be early in his career- you would think this would reduce flexibility – but this is just a guess on my part.

Is there a fitness expert out there that can shed any light on this?

  4. Montreal Impact played good compact soccer today. They got back in numbers and went forward in numbers collectively. They got rewarded with the goals too. Real Salt Lake did a good job maintaining width between the middle to the outside sidelines going side to side. Keep it up both teams. I do not follow either team, just good soccer when I see it.

  5. Anyone know why Guzan is on the bench? I do feel bad for Given … 4 out of 5 Southampton goals before halftime were due to atrocious defending. Could have been 6 or 7.

    • Guzan conceded a howler to Aguero and Man City as he was trying to distribute the ball from the back. He has been on the bench ever since.

Agreed about the atrocious defending. Lazy and incompetent.

      • to be fair to both GKs, their defense has been terrible all season; thus their position in the table..

      • Guzan had a bad mistake but he has also been arguably , Villa’s best player for a long time.

The move strikes me more as Sherwood using that as a reason make an example of Guzan and shaking up the team.

You know, the old “we’re in trouble, produce NOW or you are out even if you have been a great player for us like Guzan”.

While he is a thousand years old, for a few games, Given is not much of a drop off from Brad at his best so it was a safe gamble to make.

Most important of all,it seems to have worked and Villa are now safe.

Sherwood can sort out the damage to “hurt feelings” and charges of blatant Anti Americanism later.

    • Guzan was benched after that howler vs. Man City. Carried the team on his back for 2 years and then dumped after a bad mistake.
