Kreis stresses belief and confidence for NYCFC to break out of slump

NEW YORK — It’s been so long since New York City FC last won a match that the club’s head coach Jason Kreis is having a tough time recalling that memory.

“I don’t even remember it,” Kreis said in jest to the media after his team drew 1-1 with the Houston Dynamo Saturday at Yankee Stadium.

The club currently sits in last place in the Eastern Conference — and the whole league for that matter — with eight points through 13 matches. Its last win came in the second week of the season when it defeated the New England Revolution, 2-0, at home.

“It’s incredibly frustrating and it’s a huge challenge,” Kreis said on what is now an 11-match winless streak. “Coaches need wins to have belief amongst the team. The team looks at you, wonders whether you know what you are talking about, and they’ll believe that you know what you’re talking about when they win. When they don’t, you have to sense they have doubts.”

But for the moment at least, Kreis believes the team is still together and has trust in him and his coaching staff. He would just like that kind of belief to be instilled in each player as well in order to get better results moving forward.

“I think there is a continuing theme that I think that I see, that the players need to be a little more brave, a little more bold and a little bit more self-belief about what they are and who they are,” Kreis said.

“Because we may not be the best team in the league for sure, but we are certainly capable of playing better than we did for long stretches of that first half,” he added. “So we have to demand more of ourselves and believe a little bit more because at the moment, I just think there are a lot of guys that are just a little bit afraid.”

Rookie forward Khiry Shelton, for one, understands just how important confidence can be for an attacking player.

“With risk there is reward, I think that’s what [Kreis] wants,” Shelton said. “After you beat a player a couple of times, you build confidence and you feel unstoppable. I think he just wants us to keep doing that.”

After Houston dominated for most of the first half, NYCFC came out of the break and did a better job at controlling the tempo for the remainder of the game.

The home side ended up taking 13 shots in the contest with seven of them on target, but managed to post just a 61 percent passing accuracy in the final third of the pitch and completed only 15 percent of its crosses.

Defender Jeb Brovsky was one of the few NYCFC players who had two chances to score what would have been the go-ahead goal when he pushed forward in the closing minutes of the contest.

“I think we are a better team when we are taking chances and on our front foot,” said Brovsky, who had a diving header saved by Houston goalkeeper Tyler Deric in the 89th minute and a volley that went just wide of the goal a couple of minutes later.

“We are not a good team when we sit back and we let teams just come at us,” Brovsky added. “I think you see throughout the season we are the best when we are pressing teams and we are going forward. I think we did that at times today but we’ve got to do that for 90 minutes.”

  1. It’s an expansion club. Expansion clubs are not successful, general rule. Why is everyone always shocked by this? I know that people looked at Orlando and nycfc and thought they’d be great, but why? It takes time and a full team in MLS. A dp or two and a team made of guys picked in the expansion draft just isn’t good enough. They just don’t have the talent to compete. It’ll come, maybe, and Kries has a track record to show that, but you can’t take a bunch of random guys and a couple of aging greats and succeed any more. First season you’re lucky to get nine MLS starters, you need 15 to succeed.

    • +1. Exactly. Why would anybody expect a team with these players to be good? Frank Lampard is not here, “David Villa” is a busted up shell of the player whose name and identity he has apparently stolen, and they don’t have a third DP yet.

Seriously…. look at the starting XI below from this weekend:

      Josh Saunders (Goalkeeper)
Andrew Jacobson (4 Caps for USA Futsal. Unfiltered garbage at actual soccer)
Chris Wingert (Actually has a US Cap…. It should be on Ebay soon)
Jason Hernandez (No relation to Aaron)
Jeb Brovsky (Ambassador for the Homeless World Cup. Seriously)
Shay Facey (Decent Boy Band name)
Mix Diskerud (An actual soccer player)
Mehdi Ballouchy (32 year old veteran who has amassed zero caps for Morocco)
Sebastián Velásquez (Good hustle out there!)
      “David Villa”
Adam Nemec (Scored vs. Luxembourg for Slovakia recently)

Why would anybody “expect” this side to make the playoffs? Alex Ferguson could coach this side and they wouldn’t be much better than mid-table…. in USL.

  2. If nyc dont make the playoffs and lose to cosmos, then kreis should be let go or he should quit.
However, Isnt kreis the highest paid coach in mls and the best coach coach in mls, which I think hes overrated, right.
If theres an mls team that can bring a big name coach and pay him good, its nyc. By the way didn’t kreis make this team with his own taste and hands.
Pathetic if he doesn’t make the playoffs and he knows it.
