For 21 teams, the U.S. Open Cup dream is still alive, but for 21 more, the tournament has come to a quick end.

The U.S. Open Cup kicked off Wednesday with a series of 21 matchups to start the tournament’s opening round. The victors have now earned a spot in the tournament’s second round, which is scheduled for May 20 and will see the introduction of professional clubs into the field.

Wednesday’s opening round was dramatic for the pair of teams that earned spots in the tournament through the play-in round. Both Cal FC and Harpo’s FC saw their contests pushed to penalty kicks, with Cal FC falling to Ventura County Fusion, 6-5. Meanwhile, Harpo’s FC was the beneficiary of penalties, knocking out BYU Cougars with a 4-2 victory from the spot.

In all, eight of the 21 matchups went to penalty kicks, with two additional games being decided in extra time.

Here’s a closer look at the results from Wednesday’s opening round of the U.S. Open Cup:

    • Yes. The 27th is when NASL comes in. Then it is the 2nd week of June, I believe when MLS gets involved. Then there is a drawing to figure out the placement for the 5th round, which is the quarters, semis, and final.

…or you could get off your lazy ass and google it instead of making me type all this crap!
