USMNT vs. Germany: SBI Live Commentary

The U.S. Men’s National Team is a month away from the CONCACAF Gold Cup, and today will offer the toughest prep test on the schedule.

The Americans take on Germany today in Cologne (2:45pm, Fox Sports 1) in a rematch of the 2014 World Cup match won by the Germans a year ago in Brazil.

The Germans are missing several key starters, but will still feature a strong attack led by Mesut Ozil, Mario Goetze and Bastian Schweinsteiger. Their defense is very experimental though, which could mean scoring chances for a U.S. team that scored four goals to beat the Netherlands on Friday.

SBI will be providing live commentary on today’s action so feel free to follow the action here. As always, you are welcome to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action (today’s commentary is after the jump):

  1. I can guarantee JK never got beyond the dream stage to come out of this with two wins. Keep in mind though, that both these teams play real games in a couple of days and weren’t necessarily gunning for a result in either of these games.

Still like the fact that we were the ones scoring in the last 15 rather than losing in the last 15. We’ll see what happens next month…

  2. I doubt even Klinsmann expected these results the last two games. And even more encouraging to me, the last 50 minutes the US was really the better team. I don’t care where he plays his club soccer, I think from these last two games it should be clear that MB is world class. He was clearly MOTM for me. Finally, Yedlin seemed to beat the defender every time he went down the wing. He just needs some seasoning and fine tuning of his game to become very valuable.

    • Gotta agree with on this one Gary. Quite a difference a healthy MB makes. I feel he plays better without Jones because he can drive into a more advanced role without being one of the front 2 (this is something that JJ likes to do instead).

I look forward to what Yedlin’s season is like this year at Tottenham with a full pre-season.

    • not that i agree but PERHAPS there’s at least an argument on a 32 year old and 36 year old, but giving up on a 25 year old with an american record for goals in a season overseas and 5th all time in NT scoring? this, folks, is the definition of overreacting.

    • Re: Altidore. Play him on the wing or with a strike partner in the Zardes role. Altidore remains more dangerous than Zardes, but Zardes’ chances are proof that Altidore isn’t being used right (I’ve been saying this since he’s been on the Red Bulls…).

Re: Dempsey. Play him where Mix is playing. Dempsey is more dangerous than Mix. Let the youngsters run riot in front of him.

Re: Howard. I’m not conviced by Guzan yet. He doesn’t command a game like Howard can, and I’m not sold on the way he punches/parries a ball. Guzan is acceptable, but if Howard is on form, Howard remains the No. 1.

  3. Do the majority of SBI posters not work? Haha. I am jealous of those that got to watch the game live. Can’t wait to get home and watch it.

    • Stream video on my phone on silent (I have FoxsportsGo on my phone as well as Univision Deportes, BeinSports, ESPN – get them all at home) if I am “ok” busy. If I am REALLY busy, I don’t watch it or I just have the SBI stream going.

Soccer is the only thing I watch i the Spring and Summer (except for March Madness).

      • Agree that’s getting a bit absurd now. Brooks scored in the WC after JK put him in. So did Green. Now Wood has done it twice in a week (with help from sub Morris). The results speak for themselves at this point.

  6. Evans (who a lot of idiots bashed) to Wood (who a lot of idiots bashed) combine to win a game against Germany, in Germany. I wonder when some of you guys will start giving JK the benefit of the doubt.

  7. WOOD! No way! Couldn’t accidentally score a goal in the last however games and then scores 2 against 2 of the best teams in the World!

  8. Morris in the match for 30 seconds and almost scores a brilliant outside of the food shot from outside the box! Young guys with a huge chance here.

    • haha yea i feel if zardes had swung his foot to shoot it would have made contact with the german and drawn the penalty, but I’m def looking into it too much

  9. Michael Bradley is winning balls, dancing around the opposition, making long dangerous runs, and had a beaut of an assist. He’s been extra-impressive these last two matches. Makes you wonder why he isn’t doing that for some team bigger team than Toronto.

    • he shot the ball and missed, 30 seconds later, Gotze does the same on the other end. relax, haha. i feel you but it’s ok. shots outside the box often go over the goal 🙂

  10. Too many shots from distance for the U.S. They have show a little more patience when they finally get the ball back. Also, why can’t they stop that diagonal pass to the center of the park for Germany that ignites their attack?

  11. something aint right…Agudelo is gassed… on Bradleys 50yr run Agudelo’s run left Bradley without a lane.. then on minute 31st bad execution inside the 6yrd box… Agudelo is disappointing.

    Reply
    • yep.. he also took a bad defensive angle on the german RB on the 1st goal… bad Chandler is worse for not covering Gotze.
Mistakes like this are not acceptable at this level, they work against concacaf not against top 15 teams.

  12. D Williams seemed to ease up on his tackle and FJ just stood there fake-stabbing from 5 yards away… come on guys

  13. Too bad I can’t stay on this page while I watch the game online…the damn auto-play ads here are too loud, annoying, and ever present.

  14. Interesting with Zardes on the wing. His touch and hold up play weren’t too bad against the Netherlands. But can’t complain with Agudelo starting.

      • i could envision a situation where they start together up top, but i feel ya. bardes does play some midfield but i think internationally he fits best as a true striker.

  15. Wow, that’s one serious attacking line-up for US….not a lot of protection defensively. I’m thinking 4-2 Germany.
Love the optimism from JK though.

    • I just wagered on the US to score more than 1.5 goals for +220… I also see a lot of goals in this one…. 4-3 Germany is my guess..

      • I have Uverse and couldn’t watch it at the office, when I got on the app and checked the schedule, they played an hour-long pregame then cut to Darts when the game was supposed to start…watched the UDP broadcast (helps with my understanding of Spanish lol) and then once the match was done I found someone on YouTube called “Football Life” that was streaming a German version…I wish I had watched the German version, watching it on UDP through Uverse was bad…buffering for 10-15 seconds every 10-15 seconds made it hard to watch/listen to.
