U-20 World Cup Rewind: Mali shocks Ghana; Serbia earns matchup with U.S.; and more

Half of the eight matches of the U-20 World Cup Round of 16 are now over, leaving four of the tournament’s quarterfinalists.

Mali is set for a quarterfinal berth after securing an emphatic win over Ghana, while Senegal topped Ukraine in penalty kicks to seal advancement.

Meanwhile, Serbia utilized extra time to top Hungary, earning a matchup with the U.S Under-20 Men’s National Team in the quarterfinal round following the Americans’ defeat of Colombia.

Here is a roundup of the Wednesday’s matches at the Under-20 World Cup

MALI DECISIVELY DEFEATS GHANA

Mali secured a spot in the final eight of the tournament with a shock 3-0 win over Ghana, with all three goals coming in outrageous fashion.

Some great movement and passing between Mali’s Diadie Samassekou and Adama Traore led to the first goal. Samassekou struck hard and low to beat Ghana’s Lawrence Ati from the top of the box in the 20th minute.

The second goal came in the 53rd minute, with Dieudonne Gbakle using a bit of incredible skill to win the ball and find space before striking the ball off of the bottom of the crossbar from 20-yards out.

In the 81st minute, Aboubabacar Doumbia got on the board for the final goal. Doumbia sprinted through the Ghana defense before placing a chipped ball into the corner of the net.

Mali will face Nigeria or Germany in the quarterfinals.

SERBIA DEFEATS HUNGARY IN OVERTIME THRILLER

Serbia managed to beat Hungary 2-1, with two goals coming at the very end of regulation and extra time.

Hungary took a deserving lead in the 57th minute when Zsolt Kalmar beat his man in the box and coolly slotted it to Bence Mervo, who finished in the roof of the net.

Serbia scored in the 91st to equalize against Hungary and take the game into extra-time. The goal came from Ivan Saponjic, who found spectacular contact with a corner that was whipped into perfect position.

In overtime, Serbia found the back of the net again late. This goal, though, came off the foot of a Hungarian defender. Attila Talaber tried to clear a Serbia cross and ended up redirecting the ball into the back of his own net.

Serbia will face the U.S. on Sunday in the quarterfinals.

UKRAINE LOSE ON PENALTIES TO SENEGAL

This game played to a well-matched 1-1 draw in regulation, with Senegal’s goalkeeper becoming the hero in penalties.

Ukraine took the lead in the 70th minute, when Artem Biesiedin made an overlapping run and sent a hard-struck shot to the far side of Senegal’s goal. The assist came from a clever backwards pass from Yevenii Nemtinov.

Senegal managed to score an all-important equalizer in the 83rd minute. It came from Sidy Sarr, who stole the ball off of Taras Kacharaba and shot a rocket high into the back of the net past Ukraine’s goalkeeper.

Senegal won, 3-1, on penalties, after the teams went scoreless in extra time. Senegal’s goalkeeper, Ibrahima Sy, was the hero on the night as he saved three penalties to send his side through to the next round.

Senegal will face either Austria or Uzbekistan in the quarerfinals.

    • That first goal was a reminiscent of a classic Arsenal or Barcelona finish. Ridiculous first time skill from the Mali players. Assuming Germany beats Nigeria, that could be an interesting QF matchup
