HARRISON, N.J. – Mario Gomez may someday be plying his trade with a club in the United States.
Following Fiorentina’s clash with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday at Red Bull Arena, Gomez told reporters that his future with the Italian club is undecided while also stating that he would do “the best thing for me and Fiorentina”.
In addition, the 30-year-old forward left the door open to someday joining a club in the U.S.. The German striker says that he is currently focused on doing his best with Fiorentina, but the prospect of playing on this side of the Atlantic is becoming more and more attractive.
“This is not the moment to talk about this, because I still have two years on my contract in Florence,” Gomez said when asked if he would consider playing in New York. “But there are a lot of players in Europe that can say that the league here, the soccer here is growing a lot. It could be for the future a very interesting thing for me.”
Scorer of 25 international goals, Gomez has been capped 60 times by the German national team. Formerly of Bayern Munich, the striker scored 28 goals in his best season in 2010-11 while scoring 10 in all competitions last season, his first season in Italy.
Gomez has been linked with a move away from the club in recent weeks, with Besiktas and Liverpool among his potential suitors.
Focusing on his current club, the current trip to the U.S. with Fiorentina is a positive one, Gomez says, for both his game and mentality.
Looking to improve on last season’s tally, Gomez is glad to continue to hone his craft against top-level opposition like PSG. In addition, the trip to the U.S. presents an opportunity for a fresh setting, helping ease the rigors of a challenging preseason.
“It’s not easy but it’s always nice with everything in the preseason. It’s a long time where you’re just training and training and training for six or seven weeks before the start of the league.
“To do something like this, it helps to be fresh in mind, to keep fresh because the other things. Especially here in America, it’s always nice for everybody. Especially in a stadium like (Red Bull Arena), it’s fun.”

What do you think of Gomez’s comments? Would you like to see him in MLS or NASL? How do you think he would fare in either of those leagues?

Let’s see who wants him when he’s 37? Maybe Montreal I hear they are trying to sign grandpa Didier
I didnt know SBI had reporters.
I didn’t know you could spell your last name with only 1 L
I met a retired british man the other day in LA and he was saying how much he loves this country. He’s only 67 but he’s considering playing here eventually as well. Could be a great marquee signing for Atlanta or LAFC
Would you like to be president someday?
Yeah, sure, I’d like to be president someday. Why not?
Would you like to visit Fiji someday?
Yeah, sure, I’d like to visit Fiji someday. Why not?
Would you like to sail the Caribbean someday?
Yeah, sure, I’d like to sail the Caribbean someday. Why not?
Sounds like you have a lot of aspirations in your life. I say you go out and do those things bud.
Eh, he might be able to keep up with MLS speed of play.
Can this stop being a news story? It is cool that many top players say they would like to play here……eventually.
but it is not the early 2000’s anymore. Any european player saying he would potentially would play in the MLS is not a story.
I will say that looking at the MLS top scoring list right now – it is cool to see those names – keene, villa, giovinco, kaka.
Don’t read it if you don’t want to see it. I bet you watch Keeping up with the kardashians just to post how much you hate the Kardashians. Point being you torture yourself by reading something you don’t want to read.
When articles like this make the rounds on SBI, you know not much is going on in the soccer world.
This^^For the love of God, why is this news? The team is TOURING in the US. What’s he gonna say? No, your country is terrible and the league is bush. I hate it here, it’s crap? He’s said what EVERY foreign player says when asked while here. I can see, maybe, playing here one day. Who knows? SMH.
I totally agree. I actually think reporters should stop asking that question to foreign players in general. They know what the answer is gonna be so why bother even asking it?
Players at big clubs say this to just about every country short of South East Asian countries. They’re all asked if they’ll ever play in said country and the answer is always the same. Stop trying to flatter yourself as an American and realize this dude would say the same thing if they were touring Australia.
What a joke you people are with your ignorance
make it happen RB!
No shi… what football player wouldn’t?
Klinnsman. He says don’t come here.
When Klinsmann start giving 30+ year old players that aren’t within the Nats player pool career advice?
He supported Jermaine Jones coming to MLS….
I took a picture with Jermaine Jones at the ESPY’s last week, it’s on my instagram
not true. he is against players in their prime, who are big US players, like Bradley, coming to MLS IF they have good European options.
he was ok with Jones and Mix coming to MLS, for example, because they didn’t have good options.
