Andi Herzog is going to get a closer look at some new faces ahead of October’s Olympic qualifying.
Herzog has called in 28 college players to to Carson, California, for a College Identification training camp ahead of October’s qualifying for the 2016 Summer Olympics. The camp will run from August 5-8 at the U.S. National Training Center in Carson.
“It will be great to work with this group and have a look at them,” Herzog said. “We have brought college players in and have seen them go on to have success with the senior team. Jordan Morris was an example of that this year. This camp is another chance to build our pool of talented players.”
Among the players called in is goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann, son of U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, and midfielder Ian Harkes, son of former USMNT standout John Harkes. In total, 11 of the players called in have experience playing in the U.S. youth system.
Take a closer look at the full 28-player roster below:
GOALKEEPERS: Wade Hamilton (Cal Poly; Murrieta, Calif.), Jonathan Klinsmann (Cal; Newport Beach, Calif.), Kendall McIntosh (Santa Clara; Santa Rosa, Calif.), Andrew Tarbell (Clemson; Mandeville, La.).
DEFENDERS: Jonathan Campbell (North Carolina; Greensboro, N.C.), Alex Crognale (Maryland; Gahanna, Ohio), Chase Gasper (UCLA; Alexandria, Va.), Tomas Hilliard-Arce (Stanford, Matthews, N.C.), Grant Lillard (Indiana; Hinsdale, Ill.), Jakob Nerwinski (Connecticut; Lawrenceville, N.J.), Chris Odoi-Atsem (Maryland; Mitchellville, Md.), Sam Strong (UCSB; Santa Barbara, Calif.), Brandon Vincent (Stanford; Valencia, Calif.).
MIDFIELDERS: Corey Baird (Stanford; Escondido, Calif.). Andrew Brody (Lousiville; Orlando, Fla.), Mael Corboz (Maryland; Green Brook, N.J.), Niko Hansen (New Mexico; Sacramento, Calif.), Ian Harkes (Wake Forest; Fairfax, Va.), Patrick Hodan (Notre Dame; Brookfield, Wisc.), James Moberg (Washington; Winsdor, Calif.), Adam Najem (Akron; Clifton, N.J.), Keegan Rosenberry (Georgetown; Ronks, Pa.), Jake Rozhansky (Virginia; Germantown, Md.).
FORWARDS: Michael Gamble (Wake Forest; Columbia, Md.), Connor Maloney (Penn State; Harrisburg, Pa.), Alex Muyl (Georgetown; New York, N.Y.), Paul Salcedo (Cal; Inglewood, Calif.), Mac Steeves (Providence; Needham, Mass.).

What do you think of the roster? Any standouts? Which players can you see making an impact on the international level?

There has to be another way to get players instead of the college system. I don’t know what it is but come on son, it’s 2015 and US Soccer is still getting players from the College ranks?!?
You are criticizing the USSF for turning over every single rock to do their job.
The College system is not perfect but it did just give you Jordan Morris and maybe there are others who fell through the cracks.
What is wrong with looking?
…so we should look anywhere Americans are playing????? I have no issues with it. It kinda reminds me of college walk-ons. Every collegiate program has 7-10 kids each year that it recruits, then usually invites walk-ons to try out. Every year or 2, one meaningful player joins. These are walk-on’s, I am willing to be 1 or 2 might come from this group that might help out in qualifying.
Eric Wynalda won’t have any kids in the camp… right? Just checking.
Calling up ones son is unacceptable.
Can you prove Paolo is your son?
Bradon Vincent LB of the future.
+1
That’ll never work.
While I think its good that the coaches are looking everywhere possible for players to contribute, I believe that the majority of the Qualifying squad should (and will) be derived from the professional environment. While the European clubs may not release players (Brooks, Yedlin, etc….) both MLS and FMF Clubs have always done a good job of releasing players for this competition. If we can’t piece together a quality team from the U-20 Standouts and the professionals released by their clubs I’d be very surprised.
Keepers: Cropper, Steffen, Horton,
Defense: Miazga, CCV, Dean, Packwood, Donovan, Acosta, O’Neil, Zimmerman, EPB,
Midfield: Zelalem, Gall, Gil, Green, Villareal, Trapp, Canouse, Stanko, Pelosi, Pfeffer
Forward: Tall, Arriola, Morris, Shelton, Kiesewetter, Salgado, Rodriguez,
There should be enough of these guys released from their clubs to make a team able to qualify for the Olympics.
“I believe that the majority of the Qualifying squad should (and will) be derived from the professional environment.”
That will always be true but what you are advocating is callled cutting off your nose to spite your face.
Very narrow minded.
It’s Not narrow minded….It’s Realistic.
I’m glad that they are looking for quality players from the college ranks. I’m just not deluded enough to believe that there are a huge number of college players who can beat out players in a professional environment.
Players like Morris who have chosen to stay in college instead of turning pro are few and far between. Not saying that there might not be another out there…..but it isn’t all that likely either.
Realistic? Of course not.
But then again would you have said Morris had a realistic shot at being so good for the USMNT?
Would JK even have known about him if the USMNT hadn’t held a camp at Stanford and they needed him to make up numbers at practice?.
I doubt they expect to find to find another Morris but you never know and it’s hardly costing them an arm and a leg so yeah your attitude in condemning this move by them is narrow minded.
Nepotism and then we ask why the U.S. does not do well at big tournaments. Selections made for wrong reasons.
Sie den Oberherren gemeldet wurden.
Huh?
Michael Bradley only plays because of his father, right?
Michael Bradley read plenty of that growing up. It was a big part of him deciding to take the hard way and go to Europe where there would be no comments on whether he was deserving to start, play or not.
He has a pretty good career at Herenveen, Borussia Monchengladbach and AS Roma (with some other clubs in-between) all on pure footballing ability, with no influence from his father.
If Klinsmann Jr, want to prove his worth from those who say that he gets preferential treatment from his dad, I would advise him to head to Europe ASAP, but forego the german Clubs
I am pretty sure that MB didn’t read nor care about any of the “talk” of nepotism. He went to he Netherlands because Eredivisie was a step up in competition and he wanted to measure his play against better competition (MLS was not as good then as it is now). Is MB was a regular starter at Roma making Eur 4-5 million a year and playing in Champions League, there’s a very good chance he would still be there.
watch Andrew brody from Louisville. I saw this kid when he played in Miami for Orlando city and he will be the next kid to surprise people
Klinsmann is the only freshmen called in, only one with ZERO NCAA experience. I don’t recall there being a strictly college camp before. Good idea or just a construct so young Klinsmann can be called in?
I don’t think this was simply to get young JK into a camp. That said, I do think he is the fortunate beneficiary of the camp.
And, I think this is a great idea. If we get one Morris (or better yet a solid CB) out of the group, then it’s worth it.
Tomas Hilliard-Arce!

Sie sind willkommen , mein Sohn. Aber sobald ich gefeuert , Sie auf eigene Faust .
Nicht Vater Sorgen, das ist nicht Mexico. Sie haben mindestens drei weitere Jahre .
His son is a gifted goalie. Unfortunately for you, neither big Kilns, nor little Klins have any idea who you are or what your thoughts are. You don’t matter to them at all. Think about that next time you think your opinion holds any weight
Hey RB it looks like you are responding to me. What opinion did I give about Klinsmann? I stated a fact about him being the only incoming Freshman called. I then posed a question regarding having a college ID camp for the U23s. No opinion giving. You however did state an opinion by saying Klinsmann is a gifted goalie.
wood chip zip,
What will you do if Jonathan Klinsmann turns out to be a really good keeper?,
Hahahaha Jonathan Klinsmann! Hahahaha
I didn’t even notice until my phone notified me! Hahaha
Lol, well done.
