As one of this week’s Open Cup matches pits familiar East Coast foes against each other, the two others give fans rematches of some of this season’s most exciting games.

Last week, Real Salt Lake beat the LA Galaxy 1-0 to progress to the semifinals of the 2015 U.S. Open Cup. Now, six teams face off in a fight to secure the three remaining spots in the next round.

The Philadelphia Union will travel to the the New York Red Bulls for a match early Tuesday evening. The Union won their only meeting so far against the Red Bulls this year, 2-0, with goals from Vincent Nogueira and C.J. Sapong marking the difference.

Sporting Kansas City will host the Houston Dynamo in Tuesday night’s second match. The Dynamo hosted Sporting KC on April 25 in a ridiculous 4-4 draw. Now, the two Western Conference foes will square off again.

Orlando City will travel to take on the Chicago Fire on Wednesday for the last match of the round. The Fire will be looking for a bit of payback after losing on June 6 in Toyota Park in a game that saw them lead for extended periods before two late goals gave Orlando the win.

Here is an in depth look at the three remaining quarterfinal matchups:

NEW YORK RED BULLS vs PHILADELPHIA UNION, Tuesday, 4 p.m.

The New York Red Bulls clinched a spot in the quarterfinals of the tournament with a 4-1 drubbing of local rivals the New York Cosmos. Philadelphia found its way in with a 2-1 victory over D.C. United, despite going down a man early in the match.

The Red Bulls have found success through multiple contributors in their attack over the past few matches. Since the win over the Cosmos on July 1, the Red Bulls have had six different goal scorers.

Sacha Kljestan is coming off of a world-class strike against Orlando City in MLS play, Bradley Wright-Phillips scored a brace against New England two weeks back, and Dax McCarty has been showing his worth on both sides of the field. Jesse Marsch’s side comes into the match with all these players that can take over the match.

Philadelphia, meanwhile, has fielded strong sides throughout the duration of the tournament, likely because it is the Union’s best shot at silverware this season. The runners-up from the 2014 competition will certainly be looking to Sebastian Le Toux in this match, given that he is the scoring leader in the Modern Era of the tournament.

The Union have been maddeningly inconsistent in their last eight competitive matches. The side was destroyed by the Galaxy, managed a victory over the Sounders, drew the Impact, decisively beat the Timbers, and then narrowly lost last weekend to Toronto FC.

The winner of this match will host the winner of the Chicago Fire vs Orlando City game in the next round.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY vs HOUSTON DYNAMO, Tuesday, 8:30 p.m.

Kansas City put six up at Sporting Park against a second-tier FC Dallas side in the last round, while Houston managed a 1-0 win over a defensively-sound Colorado Rapids team.

Sporting KC has only lost one match since April 19. The Dynamo, meanwhile, have lost six times since that date.

With Giles Barnes away with Jamaica in the Gold Cup, it will be entirely up to Will Bruin and Brad Davis to lead this Houston attack to an Open Cup upset. Kansas City boasts a much more potent attacking roster, though, with a number of members able to contribute if Peter Vermes chooses to field a first-class side on Tuesday.

Benny Feilhaber has been one of the most impressive midfielders in the league this season, and he has been scoring as well as assisting. Krisztian Nemeth has been lethal in front of goal, and made history by becoming the first MLS player to score all seven of his first shots on target. Dom Dwyer has finally found his form after early struggles, and has scored six goals in his last five matches.

CHICAGO FIRE vs ORLANDO CITY SC, Wednesday, 8:30 p.m.

The four-time champions and so called “Kings of the Cup” in the Chicago Fire have found their way deep into the tournament yet again, despite another disappointing MLS season. Meanwhile, Orlando City will be looking for solace in further Cup success as its league results have slid as of late.

There are not many positive ways to spin the first half of the season for the Chicago Fire. Three new Designated Players have failed to find form on a consistent basis. Luckily, though, David Accam has returned from an injury and Shaun Maloney will also be available for Wednesday’s match.

Fire stalwarts have played their hearts out in this Open Cup, though, and it would be unwise to count them out of the competition. A lone Quincy Amarikwa goal helped Chicago beat Orlando’s USL affiliate Louisville City FC in the fourth round. Then, Chicago felt the magic of the cup in a 3-1 win over the Charlotte Independence. Mike Magee recorded a brace in his first start back since hip surgery and Lovel Palmer scored a screamer.

After a victory in penalties over the Charleston Battery in the fourth round of the cup, Orlando City left nothing to chance against the Columbus Crew in the last round. Orlando head coach Adrian Heath fielded his first-choice side against the Crew at home, and came out with a solid 2-0 victory.

Carlos Rivas has been the story of the competition so far for Orlando, with the Colombian finding his form. Rivas netted a hat trick in the Charleston match, and scored a golazo against the Crew in the next round.

  1. Bummer for the Red Bulls. Out of yet another US Open Cup. They are not going to win the Supporters Shield,….and the way the Galaxy are playing, I don’t think they can win MLS Cup.

Good for the Union. Maybe this can spark a little bit of a run.
