The U.S. Department of Justice is following through on their plans to bring seven disgraced former FIFA officials to the USA for trial.
The Swiss Federal Office of Justice confirmed in a press release that the U.S. Embassy in Switzerland submitted extradition requests for the seven men arrested on May 27 at the Baur Au Lac hotel in Zurich, Switzerland early in the morning. Those seven men include former CONCACAF president and FIFA vice president Jeffrey Webb, as well as Uruguay’s Eugenio Figueredo, also a former FIFA vice president.
According to reports, the seven arrested men have been confined to their cells for 23 hours a day, and have received no special privileges.
According to the press release, the Zurich Cantonal Police will grant the seven arrested a hearing on the extradition requests. The FOJ will then grant the former officials a 14-day period of which to respond to the request.
The seven men were included in a 47-count indictment unsealed on May 27 that alleges the men and organizations indicted colluded to acquire more than $150 million in bribes, kickbacks, and other schemes involved in selling the media and broadcast rights of FIFA tournaments.
Here are some more stories to kick off your Thursday:
MILAN SIGN BACCA FOR €30 MILLION
AC Milan are splashing the cash for a South American star who has proven himself on European shores.
The Italian club announced Thursday morning that they had signed Sevilla forward Carlos Bacca by triggering his release clause, valued at €30 million ($33.2 million). The Colombian international had featured for his country in June at the Copa America but with Colombia knocked out, he’s free to complete his move to Milan.
Bacca scored 28 goals in 55 games for Sevilla last season in all competition, including 20 in La Liga and seven in the UEFA Europa Lead as Sevilla won their fourth-ever title. Bacca also won the Europa League with Sevilla in 2014.
STOKE CITY AGREE FEE FOR SHAQIRI
One of Switzerland’s top players is headed to England.
According to BBC Sport, Stoke City have agreed on a €12 million transfer fee to sign Xherdan Shaqiri. The playmaking midfielder only lasted half a season with Inter, having made 13 starts in 20 matches in all competitions, scoring just three times.
Shaqiri impressed fans across the world for his displays at the 2014 World Cup, but due to a log-jam at central midfield with Bayern Munich, Shaqiri asked for a move away from the club to earn playing time.
The 23-year-old has scored 17 goals in 46 appearances for Switzerland in his career.

Speaking of things not being talked about, did anyone else find it odd that very little was made of the head to head collision in the USA/GER match? I thought that was handled really poorly in terms of poorly managing a bleeding head wound to demonstrating no regard for potential head injury. That moment sent a piss poor message to a lot of young players who will think that the world class thing to do is shrug off a concern of concussion. Just not cool.
All this dribble… and not one mention of probably the most heart wrenching moment I have witnessed in Womens’ World Cup history last night… It is national news… I mean seriously guys… a World Cup semi final that even Good Morning America is talking about and nothing from SBI…
+1
Talk about an own goal….
She could not do that again if she tried to a 1000 times in a row…
Yeah good point. Meanwhile we have three articles on the RBNY-Cosmos game.
Make that four articles.
thank you
Other than the former president of concacaf, why would the other six be tried in the usa? If the illegal activities took place in other countries. Doesn’t make any sense to me.
I assume because some of these illegal activities may have taken place at some point on US soil or through american intermediaries.
The Department of Justice is claiming jurisdiction because the bribe money was wired through American banks.
They belong to an organization which is headquartered in the US and used US financial institutions to commit their crimes.
