Danny Szetela has been an integral part of the New York Cosmos’ 2015 campaign, and the club wants him to be so for the near future.
Friday, the New York Cosmos announced a contract extension of Szetela, who has started in 12 matches and provided one assist in 2015.
“Right now I really enjoy the way we train and approach each game,” Szetela told the club’s website. “The club is like a family. I love it here and we have some unfinished business so it was an easy decision for me to come back.”
“Danny has been an important player for this team from day one and we’re delighted that he’ll be staying on,” head coach Giovanni Savarese said. “He’s got a lot of match experience and attributes that are key to the way we play and he’s a player that keeps getting better every year.”
The 28-year-old U.S. international plies his trade as a central midfielder for the Cosmos and has made 47 NASL appearances in the last three years, including a start in the 2013 NASL championship where the Cosmos won the title.
Szetela came up through the U.S. Soccer system, and even played in the 2007 FIFA Under-20 World Cup alongside Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore. He has made three appearances for the USMNT, with his last run out coming in 2010.
What do you think of Szetela’s extension? Think he can help the Cosmos to a title in 2015?

I’m totally surprised cosmos did not go after ronaldinho, drogba, casillas, tevez.
I think they have the money and power and if they want to win the open cup, then they gotta spend.
I think most of that is posturing. Maybe they’ll open it up after they get the stadium finished and actually start making money. As fun as it would be to run a soccer, nobody likes throwing money into a pit. I really doubt they’ll make many moves this window (I’ve only seen them linked to the 34 year old Italian) and they’ll set themselves up for an Open Cup run next year, but again, I bet they’re holding back until they break ground on the stadium, or they really don’t have as much money as they make it seem.
I don’t think that’s true. The NYRB spend way more than the Cosmos and they’re out of the USOC. Spending has never been a great indicator of success. IMHO
I actually think you can make the argument that the Cosmos are actually out spending the Red Bulls right now. Obviously we can’t know for sure, but given RB’s total payroll is $3.9 mil, and Raul is probably making 7 figures, or close to it, and Senna makes $575k as reported, if the Cosmos payroll isn’t more than $4 mil, it’s definitely close.
I’m glad anytime an American player finds a stable playing situation. But I question why the article refers to him as a “U.S. International” when he hasn’t worn a USMNT jersey in 5 years, just to make this signing sound more meaningful than it really is… There’s got to be a statute of limitations on using that label, no?
Eveyrone does it… Fulham still calls Scott Parker an England player
Good to see these former US international “flame outs” end up somewhere.
They end up mls in droves.

Just curious, anyone know what he might be making? I know nothing about NASL salaries or the Cosmos specifically.
Starters will make $25K-$100K+ in the NASL. NYC has a tendency to be higher in the salary scale than a lot of other teams. My guess is he is making in the $60K-$85K range.
