U-20 USMNT forward Maki Tall signs with FC Sion

Maki Tall’s summer may have not started out like he would have liked, but it has just gotten a whole lot better.

Tall announced via Twitter on Tuesday that he has signed with Switzerland outfit FC Sion. The 19-year-old forward most recently played for French club Red Star FC on loan from Lille, but he will now look for first-team minutes in the Swiss Super League with a club in Sion that finished in seventh place out of 10 last season.

The move comes as good news for Tall, who saw his Under-20 World Cup campaign with the U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team cut short because of an injury. The promising prospect started and scored in the Americans’ 2-1 win vs. Myanmar in the tournament opener, but sustained a broken left toe that ruled him out for the remainder of the World Cup.

Tall played a combined 15 minutes in two league appearances last season for Red Star.

What do you think about Tall signing with FC Sion? Consider it a good move? Do you see him earning significant minutes this season?

  1. whether ligue 2 or the swiss super league is of superiority is irrelevant. the swiss league gets far more scouting and media attention and is concidered the number one development league in europe (which makes it number 1 in the world, too) surrounded by france, italy and especially germany. many great talents enter europe’s top through switzerland and then move on. africans do it. south americans do it. i’m sure what’s good for everyone is good for the north americans, too. fc sion finished 7th. but they won the cup. and they are the development team within the development league who increases market values of players in no time. and regarding the salary. its not millions and not a million, either. but its more than he would be getting in the MLS and he sure as hell develops better there as opposed to playing against teams like Vancouver White Caps (amazing city btw), LA Galaxy (same) or New York Red Bull (most amazing..). i hope we see more young americans in europe. everyone benefits. and i hope he will like it here untill he moves on to a bigger club. good luck mate

  2. No doubt this kid can play and score goals. Hes done it with France youth teams and recently with the US U20. He will get his chance and this is a great move. I beleive sion will also play the europa league as they won the Swiss Cup this year. Good luck to him I guess

  3. I don’t imagine the Swiss Super Leauge’s level of play is any more competitive then Ligue 2

He must of been promised a chance to compete for minutes or a pay raise.

    • It’s 12th in the UEFA coefficient so I’d imagine it’s probably a little better than Ligue 2. I have no idea which league pays more though.

      • The FIFA rankings can be very iffy, but I imagine the two aren’t very different. Can’t say I watch either that’s for sure so you could be right.

      • It’s the UEFA coefficient and it’s based on results in UEFA competitions over the past five years. Imperfect maybe but a lot better than the FIFA rankings where scrub teams like Romania are in the top 10 somehow.

      • Anybody who’s familiar with the FIFA rankings over the years dealing with the USMNT over the years knows how misqued the rankings can be.

Whichever the case, based on finances, Ligue 1 is of superiority.

      • Forget who pays more Swiss have cost of living. But you can get great dairy products and the largest pretzels I’ve ever seen

      • Meaning high cost of living in Switzerland? I know a number of people who work in Geneva but live just across the border in France because of the lower cost of living there. It’s hard to argue with the food on either side of the border.

    • He will likely make more money, have a very reasonable shot at a starting spot, and has the opportunity to play in the Champions/Europa Leagues.

Plus, players like Xherdan Shaqiri got their start there.

I don’t know nearly enough about the 7th place Swiss league team to have an opinion.
