On Tuesday night in the Amsterdam ArenA, a perennial European soccer power lost the opportunity to play in the UEFA Champions League group stage in the upcoming season.
Ajax missed out on a chance to be a part of the UCL group stage after five consecutive years as Ajax lost on aggregate, 5-4, to Rapid Vienna in the third round of qualifying.
The famous Dutch side lost 3-2 on Tuesday after rallying from a two-goal deficit at home. Ajax leveled the score in the 75th minute through Nemanja Gudelj with hopes to force extra time, but Rapi went back in front just two minutes later.
After a first-leg score of 2-2 in Austria, Frank de Boer’s men needed a victory at home to go through to the next stage of the competition.
Elsewhere in Champions League qualifying, AS Monaco made it past Swiss side Young Boys, 7-1 on aggregate, Dinamo Zagreb advanced past Molde on away goals, as did APOEL, advancing past FC Midtjylland on away goals.
Here are some more news and notes for your Tuesday evening:
ROMA AGREES DZEKO FEE
After four years with Manchester City, forward Edin Dzeko is reportedly on his way out of the club with a new move to Italy.
AS Roma and Man City have agreed to a £14 million ($21.8 million) fee for Dzeko’s transfer, according to reports in England and Italy. Dzeko scored just four goals in 11 starts for the Citizens in the English Premier League last season, suffering from numerous injuries
The fee is just over half the £27 million that Man City paid Wolfsburg for the striker in January 2011. Dzeko enjoyed a bit of success with the EPL club, finishing as the top goalscorer in the 2012-2013 season and scoring 26 in all competitions the following year.
DI MARIA COMPLETES MEDICAL IN QATAR
It seems that the summer drama surrounding Angel Di Maria is just about finished.
The former UEFA Champions League winner reportedly completed his medical on Tuesday ahead of a proposed move to Paris Saint-Germain. The hospital in Qatar where Di Maria had his physical posted pictures of the midfielder in its facilities.
Di Maria scored four competitive goals for Manchester United in his debut season, tallying eleven assists in all competitions.
ASHLEY YOUNG AGREES NEW DEAL
Manchester United midfielder Ashley Young has reportedly agreed a new deal with the club.
The speedy winger started 23 games in the Premiership for Man United last season, becoming an integral part of Louis Van Gaal’s side down the home stretch of the season.
In the beginning of last season, Young slotted in as a left wing-back in the 3-5-2 formation that Van Gaal brought to Man United from his deep run with Netherlands in the World Cup. But as the side met struggles mid-season and the formation changed to a 4-3-3, an in-form Young found success further up the left flank.

Salzburg destroyed Ajax in Europa not that long ago as well. Either Austria is getting stronger or the Eredivisie just isn’t what it once was.
It’s the latter. Twenty years ago Ajax were the best team in Europe hands down but the thought of Dutch team dominating Europe today seems far-fetched. I went to a Rapid Vienna game in February so I couldn’t help rooting for them. If they make the group stage though, I doubt they’ll pick up more than a couple of points if that.
No surprise that Ajax was knocked out-Dutch club football has been steeped in mediocrity for years, and long gone are the days of Ajax/PSV dominating in Europe.
Holland’s best players play abroad.
Good for Johansson to move away from AZ and challenge himself in the Bundesliga with Werder.
As to Ashley Young, what’s the over and under for him diving for a penalty as early as week 1 of the new season. Despicable!
