World Cup veterans headline USMNT roster for September friendlies

Tim Howard Geoff Cameron USMNT 38

By SBI SOCCER

Jurgen Klinsmann has called on a crop of familiar faces to take part in the upcoming U.S. Men’s National Team friendlies against Peru and Brazil.

Tim Howard, Geoff Cameron, Danny Williams and Jermaine Jones are among the U.S. players called into this week’s training camp ahead of Friday’s friendly against Peru.

“The bigger picture is to get some answers for how we put things together for Mexico game a month from now,” Klinsmann said. “Obviously we want to continue to have a good flow of guys from the Gold Cup, but also to bring back guys who are in position to compete for a spot on the roster for Oct. 10. Our message to these guys is simple: prove a point that you want to be at the Rose Bowl.

“With these games, it is not the time to be patient. This is really now time for the guys to make a really strong impression that they understand the situation we’re in because of what happened in the Gold Cup. These games are not about developing things for the future. This is about proving a point towards the Mexico game.”

Of the 23 players named to the squad, only Andrew Wooten enters USMNT camp for the first time.

Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey will not be in camp this week, but will join the team ahead of next week’s friendly against Brazil. Goalkeeper Sean Johnson will also join the team next week, replacing William Yarbrough, who will rejoin his club team after the Peru friendly.

Several players were left off the team due to injuries, including Fabian Johnson, DaMarcus Beasley, Kyle Beckerman and Nick Rimando.

Here is the full squad:

  1. Disappointed about the roster but not at all surprised. The one outsider is brought in to cap tie him. This roster fiasco will NEVER change under JK and he will manage to squeeze out enough wins to keep things from changing. We are not moving forward.

The only positive I have is no Zusi or Beckerman. Maybe they’re officially done now? No Benny is a crime and I think Lee N. is getting shafted as well. Both of them create more than Bradley ever will and and both are better than Mix

  2. If what Juergen says is true and this is truly the time when younger players have an opportunity to prove they deserve a shot over the more veteran players than I honestly hope Bobby Wood steps up and seizes his opportunity to continue his excellent play and surpass Jozy Altidore as the starting forward as Jozy has been playing dismally as of late.

  3. Hamid and Johnson are better keepers than Yarborough. Not like it matters in the short term for these call up but it should be pointed out how dumb it is those two got pushed out of the three spot just because a new dual national became available for JK

  4. We have younger players with those abilities but they are never given the chance. Do you remember how clumsy Lalas was as a defender and how bad Jeff Agoos was? The Coaches worked with them and they became solid defenders. Which young player(s) have developed under JK tutorledge? I’ve seen players who have the potential to become good players but are not given the chance. If you look at the players chosen, which ones would you say are the best American players in their positions in the MLS? JK clings to the status quo and does not give in form players a chance. That’s why we keep getting the results we are getting. Bill Hamid needs to be either the No. 1 or No. 2 US Keeper. Sasha, Charlie, Lletget and my Pit bull from NY Redbull need to be on that squad. As Peru and Brazil prepare for qualifying, they call new players in to give them a chance to make the squad. JK always calls retreads he left by the wayside as he meanders through his life trying to find himself and what it takes to be a manager.

      • Jack,

Just for fun, name me a USMNT roster of 23 players available today but DO NOT INCLUDE anyone who had a bad Gold Cup.

      • I’ve heard Corona is in good form right now, I haven’t seen him play.
Mix on the other hand is struggling, maybe JK intends to use him as a 10 where he’s more comfortable since MB is out, or maybe he wants to see him one last time for a week before excluding him vs Mexico.
Lleget I do wanna see how he does..

      • I’ll one up you and do it without using injured players, even.

        GK – Howard, Guzan, Hamid

CB – Besler, Gonzo, Cameron, Orozco

        FB – Ream, Yedlin, Lichaj

CM – Bradley, Jones, Williams, McCarty, Kitchen

OM – Bedoya, Feilhaber, Zardes, Lletget

FWD – Dempsey, Johannsson, Wood, Agudelo

    • Why on earth would we call in new faces right now? We have a do or die match with MExico for the Confed Cup spot on the line immediately following these two friendlies! This is time for the best players we have right now to get ready for that match. And this roster is our best players. If you have a problem with that, don’t blame JK or the coaches, because it is what it is. There will be time in January to bring in new guys. And I can’t even bother to respond about Hamid.

    • I cannot stand it when people who know little about team selection and development soccer in general foolishly come on this board to post nonsense.

      (1) National team coaches do not develop players. Again, national team coaches DO NOT develop players, club coaches do. How is a team that is together for about 30/40 days during non-tournament years supposed to develop players???? Club teams develop players because they are together about 250/300 days a year. All national team players can do is give suggestions. That is why is important for players to finds a good environment. Best teams are where they can be regular players or substitutes. In an ideal world, bottom of the table Sunderland (crap environment) is not as good as mid table France or German if they play better and train better (income aside)

      (2) Coaches choose players only on a couple facets: (A) they are doing well in league play, (B) they are known commodities, and (C) take chances on unknown players/commodities. All these players fall in the first 2 except Wooten is is more of a flyer. I don’t rate him but I understand bringing him in because as extensive as my soccer background is (and it is) these guys have better eyes than I do.

People find ways to complain about coaches they don’t like. I found myself defending JK just like I defended Bradley because a lot of these knuckleheads think that they know more and want the coach fired. You continuity unless the coach is a disaster and that has not been the case since Steve Sampson. They criticize his ability to recognize talent which is something that even his critics in Germany agree is his strength. He rebuilt the German program. He has to prepare to beat Mexico. in October. He has to stick with known commodities. After that he can experiment.

    • Wooten getting a call up is good. Finley for January camp. Hyndmann, Zelalem, Rubin and Vickers are just to good not to be in the team next year.

      Reply
      • Hyndmann, Zelalem, Rubin and Vickers are a little bit away from the team. They should be in the pool, but still a jump between full team and U20.

    • Robbo,

“Which young player(s) have developed under JK tutorledge? ”

National team managers don’t develop players, their.clubs do. Do the math on how much time a player spend swith JK vs. how much time they spend at their club.

“If you look at the players chosen, which ones would you say are the best American players in their positions in the MLS?”

That’s irrelevant . An MLS All star team is not playing Mexico in October. The USMNT is. What matters is what the players called up do for the USMNT.

‘JK clings to the status quo and does not give in form players a chance.”

BS. Unadulterated, pastuerized BS, that’s why Wooten was called in.

“That’s why we keep getting the results we are getting.”

      More BS.

“Bill Hamid needs to be either the No. 1 or No. 2 US Keeper.”

No he doesn’t. He is not as good as Howard or Guzan. He is 24 or so and has many years of learning left to do. Keeper is not a position of dire need for the USMNT at the moment.

“Sasha, Charlie, Lletget and my Pit bull from NY Redbull need to be on that squad.”

No they don’t. Sebastian has played only the 12 or so games for LA at the senior level and it remains to be seen if he can keep this up. The other three have had their day and can wait until the January Camp . This is a dress rehearsal for Mexico in October.
      .
“As Peru and Brazil prepare for qualifying, they call new players in to give them a chance to make the squad.”

How well do you really know Peru’s player pool? As for Brazil, don’t be ridiculous, they just called in Kaka. If they wanted to they could call in at least two complete starting 11’s more talented than the best American starting 11 you could possibly come up with. No sane person compares the US player pool with Brazil’s.

“JK always calls retreads he left by the wayside as he meanders through his life trying to find himself and what it takes to be a manager.”

JK has already managed a national team to third place in the World Cup. Arena has never done that and neither has Bradley. Very few managers have.

For example, Klinsmann called in Sacha several times and he performed very poorly. When SK left Belgium, he had not been playing much in a middling league.

  5. EC, this will be different. This Team is regressing. As El Comandante stated, the Minions in CONCACAF have learnt to beat us. So, why not the Giant? This Gold Cup should have taught us two things, ‘we are not what we think we are and we are not where we should be.’ We’ve become an average Team under JK. Look at squad he chose? Who is the established and experienced Right Back? Which player has the technical ability to break down and get through the back line of Peru, Brazil and Mexico? Are we going to park the bus and counter attack?

    Reply
    • if you are speaking of technical ability to beat defenders 1v1 then Deuce is probably the best they have had. But really no other American players they have now have that ability. Some of the younger players coming up look like they could have that and that’s why they need to be mixed in with the senior team soon. I know I will probably get blasted and called all sorts of names but for the Landon lovers out there please don’t come saying that he could do it. I just watched a youtube video of all his usmnt goals and didn’t see one that he actually took on a defender and beat them. They were all where he made a good run and that ball was played nicely and he was 1v1 with the keeper, a put back, a open header or PK.

      Reply
      • They could do it but neither Deuce nor Landon were particularly outstanding at taking on people one on one and beating them and then scoring.

Deuce scored goals in just about any way imaginable and was the best American ever at it.

Landon was no slouch at scoring either and he had a much better all around game than Deuce did/does.

    • As I asked the other day, who are the US players you would call up who can do this? How long have you people been following the US team? Not long, it would seem. Right now we can field a pretty good team from players who are playing or who have played in top European leagues. Five years ago we couldn’t do that. The team is better and deeper, but we only have a couple of players who could play for a top national team–Dempsey, maybe Bradley, maybe F. Johnson, and J Jones, when he was in his prime and now he isn’t. Some posters here just don’t have a realistic view of the soccer world.

  6. I guess Klinsmann’s new potion for success is to beat Mexico using our Mexicans. This guy is a nutcase. Can’t wait till he is sacked or renounces. If we lose to Mexico, the only positive we could get would be seeing Klinsmann getting the boot so that we may have a chance at Moscow 2018. By now, everybody has figured out there’s no magic about USMNT and have learned to beat us at home, read Jamaica, Panama, Haiti, etc.

    Reply
    • Well, Orozco has been a silver bullet against El Tri in the past.

That said, don’t get your hopes up about Klinsmann leaving. He won’t get the boot unless the U.S. doesn’t qualify for Russia, and that’s still pretty unlikely no matter how disappointing the Gold Cup was.

The fact is, the US could have put out better lineups than they did in the Gold Cup and it cost them. 16 games of WCQ is plenty of time for even Klinsmann to correct his hardheaded mistakes.

    • Some of you are obsessed about Mix, when there are other scrubs in this team, such as Yedlin, Orozco, Garza, Corona and Morales.

      Reply
      • Sure but I think at least with the other picks you can at least see that Klinsmann’s logic is Liga MX = better then MLS. However with Mix, he’s not even playing well in MLS.

      • That is because Liga MX IS better. Yedlin should go a on loan to a Championship level club — go to Fulham (you wouldn’t have to move). Most 21 yr old footballers in the UK are either on loan or playing for lower level clubs. GO ON LOAN!

Morales isn’t great but he starts for lower Bundesliga club (so he can’t stink that much). That being said, he is not a starter.

  7. Strong group. Glad to see Cameron, Jones, Howard and Besler back in the team.

We need fullbacks! Really no options that have not been given a chance.. Maybe Morales trys out at rb? Or ReamBesler as fullbacks?

Not sure what mix or jozy brings to this team..

    Reply
  8. Sigh. Mix still on the team. No Benny or Lletget or Finlay. We will probably have an out-of-position right-back unless it is Yedlin. If it is Yedlin we will have a never plays at right-back. I am guessing Wooten wont even get off the bench in typical Klinsmann fashion. I guess Klinsmann gonna Klinsmann. We just gotta suck it up and accept it.

      • Only because they cannot play as a team, but when it comes to talent, they are much deeper and better 1 through 25. We should be abe to beat them. However, if (BIG IF) they turn up, they should beat us.

      • GW your so full of crap! When they beat Mexico it must be because it’s a JK manged team you say but when the team fails you never blame Jk but instead claim it’s because Jk doesn’t have right players in the pool or you claim the players failed Jk. Your so bias. Just go toss off to your bedroom poster of JK already and admit your Gay.

      • Of course it’s the players.

        They win and they lose.

I don’t see JK on the field failing to cover his man or scoring a goal.

Name me a game where JK said these guys won because of me.
        .

And Mexico has still failed to beat a JK managed USMNT.

    • What short memories some people have!

Mix has played very well for the US whenever he’s not asked to be a DMid. Additionally, he’s been played out of position by NYCFC in order to accommodate their elderly DPs. When he played RW this past weekend, he looked pretty good and could easily have had a couple of assists if his teammates finished better.

He also scores goals for the US. Who equalized against Germany again?

      Reply
  9. No Lletget but you call up Wooten? Lletget desires a call over Mix, Alfredo and Joe. I guess more of the same. Isn’t it most of these guys who got beaten by my beloved Jamaica? I’m hoping JK wakes up and realize he doesn’t have what it takes to evaluate players and let someone else take over as the Manager. They will do good in the friendly games but will this Team step up when it counts?

    Reply
    • I agree that Lleget deserves to be called in for a look. I personally think Wooten is overrated, but call him to see how he looks in person. However, to say that Klinsman cannot evaluate talent is a reach. If anything, there have never been questions about his ability to evalaute, but instead about his tactical adjustments.

      Reply
    • Klinsmann is generally going with experienced veterans. Morales has the benefit of playing in the Bundesliga, which is a lot better than MLS. Lletget has not played for the national team one time. His total club experience equals a game or two at West Ham and half a season with the Galaxy. If he continues to play well I predict he will be called into January camp. We still have no idea if he can handle the international game and Klinsmann doesn’t want to experiment right now.

  10. What does Yedlin coming say about his club situation? I thought there was talk that he wouldn’t come if he was about to go out on loan.

    Reply
      • That’s why I asked the question. My understanding was that he wouldn’t make the friendlies if he were about to go out on loan. So does this mean nothing is immanent?

      • I wouldn’t be surprised if Yedlin has less than 5 appearances for Spurs this year.. And apparently no loans are in the works.pochettino wants to keep him in camp and developing in house until he is PL ready.

Not ideal for the USMNT but he has improved his game quite a bit in the past year

      • With Bradley and Dempsey coming back after the peru game that would leave 25 players so a few will leave im sure.
Yedlin has teams looking and im guessing he will get a last min loan and play against peru then fly back over to where ever he signs.

      • If anything, he looks good as a super-sub. From 60+’, speed can kill. He’s not a bad option off the bench.

  11. My guess and it is always a guess with JK – we may see Ream and Cameron spend time at the fullback spots?

I agree with others – Lichaj would have been very helpful here.
Would have traded him for Morales’ spot.

Good to see Jermaine back. We need his grit in the midfield.
Still getting back to form, I am sure. But I think without Bradley for this first game, gives him a great opportunity to get back with the team.

This could be a disaster but I would be curious to see Jermaine in MB’s role and Danny Williams in the CDM. I say disaster because it depends on what mindset those two are in.
Feel like both are pretty extreme – either have had a noticeably good game or noticeably bad one.

however, i have not seen Jermaine’s form since he got back?

    • Yeah was alright yesterday. He’s starting flopping a lot though but that was something he picked up before the injury as well. I don’t remember when doing it before this season tho.

      Reply
    • I don’t understand the fascination people have with Lichaj. He has very little international experience and did not distinguish himself. As I pointed out the other day, while at Aston Villa, he pretty much played himself out of the starting lineup by getting beaten too often by attackers.

      Reply
      • Exactly! From times I watched him, he never made me think we were missing anything. If he’s called in, great, because he adds depth. That is about it.

      • Gary, who is the most popular player on almost every football team.. The backup QB.
It’s the same syndrome with Lichaj, Spector, and others.
Everyone does it at some point, I was 99% positive Lee Nguyen would solve our issues as a creative attacking mid during last season.
Same with Garza, I thought he was ready.
I’m trying to think of someone that a lot of SBI posters have been begging for that actually turned out ok working his way into the depth chart, and I can only think of Ream off the top of my head.
Next up, Lleget… He looks awesome and hope he’s the real deal

      • Zardes has done pretty well since coming into the squad, though I hate to admit I was in the camp that thought he’d be a flop.

      • Gary Page

“I don’t understand the fascination people have with Lichaj.”

        Then you aren’t paying attention.

You want to bet that most of the people calling for Lichaj haven’t seen him play since 2011?

        The formula is:

        JK likes player?:

He must have German roots or be a dual national.. If he doesn’t have German roots then he must suck. Whatever the case if JK likes him he must suck.

JK does not call in player?.

No doubt , “personal grudge” the slowleftarm dogma, or JK hates MLS players or simply does not know how to evaluate talent.

Or as Andy in Atlanta is proud to claim, that player must be of Polish extraction, be Jewish or gay.

This all stems from LD’s exclusion. You wouldn’t have any of this if LD had gone to Brazil.

  12. I’ll take a stab at it:

    Altidore Johannsson

    Zardes Jones Williams Bedoya

    Ream Brooks Cameron Garza

    Guzan

I think it’s gotta be a straight 4-4-2 with no diamond and no width from fullbacks. There isn’t a defender here other than maybe Garza who has been used as an overlapping back, and he really probably shouldn’t be. JK has at times switched things up and only had one of the two backs get forward, especially when a guy like Evans plays there. That means the midfielder on that side will look to provide the width. It’s kind of a strange group although probably about the best we can do under the circumstances.

    Reply
    • Yeah that would be typical JK. Play a center back at left back, a left back at right back and a guy who has played two straight years at RB in the EPL in the middle. Thank goodness we have such a genius coaching us.

      Reply
      • slowleftarm

I doubt this roster is final.

However, if it is Ream has played left back for Bolton and looked good there. . That would be very similar to how Boca used to regularly shift between left back and center back.

Cameron has now had a run at center back for Stoke, the position both he and JK feel is his best position so there is no reason to object to him playing center half for the US.

And besides Cameron he did not play ” two straight years at right back” for Stoke. That is BS.
Last season he lost that job to Phil Bardsley and split time between right back, and defensive midfield. This year they brought in Glen Johnson and for the moment Geoff appears to have a center back slot nailed down.
Playing for the USMNT, and for most national teams, is basically a part time job and versatility is vital. That is why Cameron and Ream are so valuable.

Orozco has played right back for the US before and done well.

And Garza has recently been used at right back so he could cover either side.

And of course, Yedlin and Bedoya could both do the job at right back if necessary.

      • Go to Wikipedia and look up Cameron. He went to Stoke in July 2012 and played 38 games for Pulis, almost exclusively at RB. Early in the 2013=2014 season Pulis was fired and replaced by Hughes. Cameron went to Hughes and said he wanted to play defensive mid, but Hughes continued to play him at RB for that whole season, a total of 41 games. It wasn’t until the next season, Cameron’s third, that Bardsley came to the team and, according to Wikipedia, after playing some defensive mid, Cameron split time with Bardsley at RB. So, yes, he has played at least two season at Stoke at RB. And, as Yogi would say, you can look it up.

      • “and a guy who has played two straight years at RB in the EPL in the middle. ”

should i even correct you this time…

      • DLOA,

        Leave slowleftarm alone.

He says stuff just to say stuff.

As I write this NYRB are ripping a pretty good DC Unted team to shreds. If it were a boxing match they would have awarded NYRB a TKO a while ago.

Why is that relevant ? Because this is the same guy who ripped the NYRB management a new one and blasted them for being cheap and bringing in Ali Curtis and his buddy Jesse Marsch.

So obviously, his judgement on all matters relating to soccer is not as perfect as he would have us believe.

      • He wasn’t exactly a lone voice……. pretty much all the NYRB supporters I heard/read were screaming bloody murder and the media was pretty critical as well. March and Curtis handled it about as gracefully as you could ask and went to work and well…. looking pretty good right now.

      • dalomismo,

“He wasn’t exactly a lone voice”

And that makes him right? Are you less wrong because everyone else in the mob was wrong too?

Your rationale reminds me of the old saying :

        ” Eat s++t. A trillion flies can’t be wrong.”

    • With Chandler out (and not missed) I had expected Evans to be listed. He was one of the few defenders to not look horrible in the Gold Cup.

  13. EVERY time Yedlin has looked good (or even decent) for USMNT he’s come off the bench, with his speed and dynamism. It’s like he knows he’s coming on to do something: to make an impact, to be a game changer. So while he may start, I don’t agree that’s his best use.

My initial reaction to this roster is, “Meh.” But what other choices do we have. You KNOW JK ain’t bringing in anyone new (like a Lichaj, that we could certainly use in this situation).

I am confident if our best players (howard, Dempsey, Bradley, etc) put in good games we will be fine. For me it’s a BIG if, whether or not we will get A-games from them (coming back to team, returning from injury, dealing with one still).

    Reply
      • As a midfielder, Yedlin is raw but has a ton of upside. I personally have been impressed with the improvement in his decision making and footwork since moving to the Spurs. I look forward to seeing how far his game goes once he gets regular minutes.

So Yedlin isn’t your guy at RM… Who for the USMNT is “special” – as you put it – at RM position?

    • Most likely Orozco, then Yedlin, then Garza, then Bedoya.

Cameron is doing well at Centerback for Stoke where both he and JK always wanted him so I can’t see him as anything but a CB at this point.

If Garza is the RB then Ream will be the LB..

      Reply
      • Have to disagree with you on this one. Cameron played the better part of two seasons at RB for Stoke and played RB for the US many times in qualifying and a couple of times in the WC. He has a lot more experience there than do the others. As I predicted, Klinsmann doesn’t think this is the time for any experimenting and he wants to go with experienced veterans.

      • Gary Page,

        Cameron prefers to play centrally.

Geoff has played 30 times for JK and I can think of only about 4 or 5 times that he has played right back for JK. And I’m pretty sure that was a while ago.

Right now, this season, if we are talking about El Tri in October do or die, Geoff is Stoke’s center back and from what I’ve seen, is doing well.

And if he is doing well then I want him to be one of the 2 CB’s . over any of the other CB’s on the list. Orozco can play right back just fine. If not, you have Yedlin, Garza, Morales, or even Bedoya who would do fine at right back. Ream or Garza can play left back, though I prefer Ream next to Cameron.

Besides, I don’t’ think for a minute this is a “final” roster.

Geoff Cameron’s absence from the Stoke City squad Saturday turned heads, but sources tell Goal USA the U.S. national team defender has asked to be transferred.
Geoff Cameron has spent two seasons as a starter for English Premier League side Stoke City, but he may have played his last game for the Potters.
Cameron was left out of Stoke City’s 18-man squad for its loss to Aston Villa on Saturday, and while manager Mark Hughes reportedly put Cameron’s absence down to post-World Cup rest, sources have confirmed to Goal USA that Cameron has asked Stoke City for a transfer and is a good bet to leave the club in the coming days.
Cameron’s desire to leave Stoke City stems from wanting to play as a center back or defensive midfielder rather than right back, where he has spent the past two seasons with the Potters.
Cameron joined Stoke City in the summer of 2012 from Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo on a $2.7 million transfer. He quickly became a regular starter at right back under manager Tony Pulis and retained that starting role when Mark Hughes eventually took over for Pulis.
Cameron, 29, has played as a center back, defensive midfielder and right back for the U.S. national team, and has long been considered a better prospect as a central defender. U.S. national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann has expressed that opinion for some time, and used Cameron in central defense at the World Cup, where he impressed in the U.S. team’s win against Ghana.
Cameron struggled in the team’s 2-2 tie with Portugal, was benched for the 1-0 loss to Germany, then returned to face Belgium in a defensive midfield role.”

    • Looks like JK forgot to bring enough fullbacks. Then again half the team will be playing out of position so what difference does it make.

      • Given the personal, US should play with 3 defenders, Besler-OG-Cameron or Besler-Alvarado-Cameron. Then it makes sense to have Yedlin as a winger.

      • He has Cameron, Garza, and Ream and I would guess he is hoping to get F Johnson and Beasley back before the Mexico game. He can also play Yedlin at RB.

      • Morales has certainly earned a call up…but his play for the US hasn’t justified past calls up.

To be fair, he’s played maybe 45 minutes in a central role like he does for his club. He’s gotten more run outs as a left mid by JK, which is NOT the same as a left-sided central mid.

    • Given that Bradley is not playing versus Peru, my guess is that Mix was brought in to play the 10 spot vs Peru. Would not be my first choice to be Bradley’s backup, but that seem’s like the likely scenario to me.
