With one legendary Italian defender running Miami FC as an owner, another has now joined as the club’s first head coach.

Miami FC announced Monday that the club has signed Italian legend Alessandro Nesta as the team’s first head coach. Nesta joins former teammate and Miami FC owner Paulo Maldini ahead of the club’s debut in 2016.

“I’m happy to say I’ve reached another exciting chapter in my career,” Nesta said. “I’m privileged to be allowed the opportunity to help establish Miami FC and bring it to the forefront of the NASL.”

One of the game’s most revered defenders, Nesta came to prominence as a member of Lazio before partnering Maldini at AC Milan. In 2004, Nesta was named to the FIFA 100 list of the greatest living players while also earning honors as Serie A Defender of the Year four times.

Capped by Italy 78 times, the 2006 World Cup winner concluded his career with a two-year stint with the Montreal Impact before playing three games for Chennaiyin of the Indian Super League.

“We are incredibly thrilled to bring Alessandro on board with Miami FC,” said Paolo Maldini, Miami FC co-owner and a former player for A.C. Milan and Italy’s national team. “As a former teammate and personal friend of Alessandro, I have a great amount of respect for his talent and believe that he will bring out the best in our players.”

Prior to Nesta’s hire, Miami FC owner Riccardo Silva told SBI that the club plans to begin signing players as soon as November or December ahead of the club’s inaugural season.

What do you think of Miami FC’s hire? How will Nesta fare as a head coach? What do you expect from the club in the coming years?

  1. This debacle is starting to make NYCFC look like a credible and well-thought-through execution.

Leaving aside the fact that Miami’s has just hired yet another person with zero experience in their role, I’d be curious what the new GM thinks about this approach. Whoever that is.

Anybody else find it weird that there is almost zero visible mention of David Beckham on the Miami FC website (though plenty of mention for his co-owners Riccardo Silva and Paolo Maldini)? I think Becks may have chosen to keep his brand of this debacle to the largest extent possible… or at least until there is some positive progress to report. This doesn’t qualify.

  2. Maybe I’ve just become jaded because of Miami FCs strong photo shop game but are all three of them actually standing next to each other?
