NASL Week 6: A Look Ahead

Ottawa-Fury-FC-NASL

By RYAN TOLMICH

Two unlikely contenders have a chance to continue to bolster their resume in this weekend’s NASL action.

Currently leading the Fall Season, Ottawa Fury FC travels to Indy Eleven with a chance to further build upon an 11-game unbeaten run. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Silverbacks, winners of three straight, collide with last year’s NASL champions, the San Antonio Scorpions.

In other action, the New York Cosmos take on the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, the Tampa Bay Rowdies collide with state rival Jacksonville Armada, and Minnesota United hosts FC Edmonton.

Here’s a closer look at all of this weekend’s NASL action:

ATLANTA SILVERBACKS vs. SAN ANTONIO SCORPIONS (Saturday, 7:30 p.m.)

After sputtering to a last place in the Spring Season, the Atlanta Silverbacks are now the NASL’s hottest team.

Having won three straight, the Silverbacks already have more points (10) than they did in the entire Spring (8). Led by Pedro Mendes’ four goals in six games, the Silverbacks have now scored 11 times in seven matches after burying just seven in 10 in the Spring. Now, it is up to Gary Smith’s side to prove it is for real against a Scorpions team coming off a bye week.

FORT LAUDERDALE STRIKERS vs. NEW YORK COSMOS (Saturday, 7:30 p.m.)

Now back to their winning ways with two straight victories, the New York Cosmos will look to maintain the team’s spot atop the Combined Standings in a match-up with a club they defeated just two weeks ago.

Winless in four games to that point, the Cosmos toppled the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, 2-0, to begin their recent turn in form. Riding two home wins led by the unlikely goalscoring of Hunter Freeman, the Cosmos travel to Lockhart Stadium to take on a Strikers team without James Marcelin, Karsten Smith and Stefano Pinho due to suspension.

INDY ELEVEN vs. OTTAWA FURY FC (Saturday, 7:30 p.m.)

The Fall Season’s unlikely leaders can keep their run going Saturday with a visit to Indy Eleven.

Ottawa Fury FC remains three points clear atop the table following last weekend’s victory over rivals FC Edmonton, despite having a game in hand on the teams immediately behind it in the standings. Riding an 11-game unbeaten streak that includes seven shutouts, Fury FC travels to Indiana to take on an Indy Eleven side that has been held scoreless in two straight contests.

TAMPA BAY ROWDIES vs. JACKSONVILLE ARMADA (Saturday, 7:30 p.m.)

Two Florida rivals are set to collide Saturday, and both teams are in desperate need of a victory.

The Tampa Bay Rowdies enter Saturday’s clash with the Jacksonville Armada winless since the Fourth of July, the opening day of the Fall Season. In need of an attacking boost, the Rowdies continue to wait on the health of Freddy Adu, who missed last week’s draw with the RailHawks due to injury. The Armada, meanwhile, have just one win in five games in the Fall, sitting last in the table behind both the Scorpions and Rowdies on goal differential.

MINNESOTA UNITED vs. FC EDMONTON (Saturday, 8 p.m.)

With both teams coming off losses, Minnesota United and FC Edmonton are looking to turn Saturday night’s meeting into a bounce-back contest.

Minnesota United continues to ride the hot feet of Cristian Ramirez, who has scored in five straight matches to help his side battle through a difficult schedule at the start of the Fall Season. That schedule gets even more difficult Saturday against FC Edmonton, a club that currently sits third following last week’s loss to the rival Fury FC. Led by Lance Laing, FC Edmonton has the firepower to go toe-to-toe with Minnesota in a game that showcases two of the premier players in the NASL.
