BY COLE KELLOGG
An astounding 24 goals were scored in five NASL matches this weekend, with at least five goals in every match but one.
In yet another multiple-goal victory on the road, Ottawa Fury FC continues to sit atop the NASL fall season table. The Canadian side traveled to Indianapolis to hand Indy Eleven the team’s fourth straight loss.
Elsewhere, the Atlanta Silverbacks hosted the San Antonio Scorpions in a heated, high-scoring draw. The New York Cosmos split the points with hosts the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in another multiple-goal draw.
In a matchup of top four sides, Minnesota United FC and FC Edmonton battled to a draw that saw them each stay in the top four spots.
Here is a closer look at this weekend’s results:
FURY RUN UP THE SCORE ON INDY
The best team in the league this fall is showing no signs of slowing down, with the Ottawa Fury putting up a 4-1 win over Indy Eleven this weekend. Fury FC, who also ended the spring season on a high, has now extended its unbeaten streak to 12 matches.
Sinisa Ubiparipovic got the scoring started after nine minutes as he slammed home a ball from Tom Heinemann. Andrew Wiedemann played hero for the side, picking up a brace in 12 minutes in the second-half to lead his Fury past the Eleven. Wiedemann got his first from a tight angle on the near post in the 52nd, and then lost his man and shot past Kristian Nicht for the second in the 64th.
In between Wiedemann’s two tallies, Indy got on the board through substitute Duke Lacroix while Mauro Eustaquio put in yet another for the Fury. Lacroix scored after a spectacular solo run of 40 yards, and Eustaquio fired home from a Heinemann assist.
SILVERBACKS SPLIT POINTS WITH SCORPIONS
In a thrilling 3-3 draw, the San Antonio Scorpions came back on the road to draw hosts the Atlanta Silverbacks on Saturday. The Silverbacks let a 3-1 lead slide as Billy Forbes and Omar Cummings struck in the final 30 minutes against the home team.
The Silverback’s Pedro Mendes got on the board in the 23rd minute to put his side one up with his fifth goal in the last six games. The lead didn’t last, though, as Cummings equalized for the Scorpions in the 25th minute with his ninth goal of the season.
Atlanta went in front again after Junior Burgos hit a brilliant dipping free kick from 30 yards out in the 51st minute. Jaime Chavez slotted home after a skillful run from Kosuke Kimura for the Atlanta’s third goal in the 57th minute.
The Scorpions got back in the hunt in the 60th minute through a goal from Billy Forbes, and then Cummings got his second of the night in the 71st minute. The strike from Cummings was his 10th of the season, and he ended the evening as the league’s top scorer.
COSMOS SCORE THREE LATE TO DRAW STRIKERS ON THE ROAD
The Fort Lauderdale Strikers will be kicking themselves for letting a 3-0 lead slip against the NASL spring season champions, the New York Cosmos.
After a 23rd minute goal from Gabriel and two second-half strikes from Walter Ramirez in the 48th and 59th, Gunter Kronsteiner’s men just needed to defend somewhat staunchly for a half hour to claim three points. But Gio Saverese’s side showed some resilience and fought back until the final whistle.
The Cosmo’s got on the board through Leo Fernandes in the 62nd minute, and then substitute Adam Moffat fired home for the side in the 64th to start brewing the comeback. Sebastian Guenzatti scored in the 90th minute after a talented turn in the area, bringing the score to 3-3.
U.S. youth international Haji Wright made his starting debut for the Cosmos first team in this match.
JACKSONVILLE FALLS TO ROWDIES ON THE ROAD
The Tampa Bay Rowdies put on a show in front of its home crowd with three unanswered goals, but the Jacksonville Armada almost produced the third comeback of the weekend with two goals in the second half in this 3-2 Rowdies win.
Maicon Santos followed Cummings’ example, as the former MLS striker scored two goals to put his side up early. In the seventh minute, Santos took a pass from Martin Nunez and slotted it past Jacksonville keeper Miguel Gallardo. Then, in the 32nd minute, Santos beat Gallardo from outside his box and calmly fired home in traffic for his second goal. Brian Shriver put his side up 3-0 with a brilliant strike top the top corner from the top of the box.
In the 65th minute, Santos was narrowly denied his hat trick. The player ran through the Armada defense and beat the keeper, but his shot was saved on the goal line by a sliding defender.
Alhassane Keita was not ready to give up the fight, as the attacker scored a brace of his own with goals in the 54th and 67th minutes. The first came from a penalty after Keita was brought down in the box, and the second came from a free kick that fell perfectly in between a splitting wall and into the net.
Also in this match, Lucas Trejo earned a 79th minute red card for a studs up tackle on Juan Gerrera.
EDMONTON DRAWS AT MINNESOTA
FC Edmonton drew 1-1 at Minnesota United in the lowest scoring affair of the weekend. 9,077 came out to watch the two top-four sides face off at the National Sports Center in Minnesota.
Christian Ramirez scored for the sixth straight match with his 47th minute penalty kick goal to give United the lead.
Tomi Ameobi put home the equalizer in the 70th minute for the Eddies. Lance Laing went on a 20 yard run before sending in a beautiful cross for Ameobi to tape home past the United goalkeeper.
Look at that crowd in the pic lol. Like a dozen kids and a lady sitting in a pleather chair on the touchline. So bush league.
DS – That bush league game had 9866 in attendance
Rowdies used three subs. Freddy not one of them. In terms of strategery, it wouldn’t have made sense to put him with Rowdies up 3-0, then 3-1 and then 3-2. The subs, at that point were more defensive oriented.
the Rowdies had to have watched tape on the Armada. Our Italian style sit back and absorb pressure then counter attack was the clear tactic. Armada had the much greater of the possession but other than the goals did overly test our keeper. Credit to the Armada for pushing the game. Both the PK and the foul that lead to the 2nd goal were clear fouls.
How many goals did Freddie Adu get? Or is he already relegated to the Rowdies practice squad and looking for opportunities in the Fiji league?
for real. I need a Freddie update. that’s the only reason I skim through the NASL recap
Freddy played 0 minutes.
