Another week, another outpouring of goals from Sebastian Giovinco.

Having already established himself as an MVP candidate, the Italian superstar fired yet another hat-trick this week, earning the Toronto FC forward honors as SBI MLS Player of the Week.

Giovinco led the way in TFC’s midweek demolition of Orlando City, scoring thrice in a dominant 4-1 win. Netting from the penalty spot, a free kick and on a counter attack, the Italian continues to provide scoring in a variety of ways, while his passing ability created the lone goal in TFC’s loss to Sporting KC over the weekend.

Now with 16 goals and 11 assists, Giovinco’s hat-trick earned him SBI MLS Player of the Week, beating out Kei Kamara, Giovani dos Santos and Cristian Techera for this week’s honors.

What did you think of Giovinco’s performance? Which player stood out to you this past weekend?

  1. If any people want to gauge the strength of the MLS and USMNT, there you have it. A guy who was a pretty good player (good enough to start on a good team), but not a national team regular (he did not make the ’14 World Cup Team, but made sub) on a decent International team becomes the best player in the MLS almost immediately. He is essentially equivalent to the Azzuri’s version of Sacha Kljestan, Brad Evans etc. If he stays for 5-7 years and maintain this level of performance, he would be in the argument for the best MLS player. Don’t believe me? If Giovinco walked onto the USMNT, he would be, hands-down, the best player on that team and biggest offensive threat. EASILY!

While I am glad MLS can attract his level of talent at 28, it also shows how far we are as a team and league in terms of talent development. And it is development. You can’t tell me that the Netherlands with 17 million people has more raw talent that 350 million USA (even if only 1/10th take it as their primary sport – that is still 35 million). It is our system of player identification and development (don’t worry we not the only ones with issues – I’m looking at you England).

    • *he did not make the ’14 World Cup team, but made sub appearances in qualification games and ’12 Euro Cup team

  2. I’m sure Giovinco has earned this, but what the heck is going on with Sebastian Lletget? For my money he’s been the best American player in MLS for several weeks now.

    • Best American, yes. Some could argue Benny is better. But there’s no doubt Giovinco is the best player in MLS right now. Period.
